Much is reported in the literature about the transmission and presentation of conjunctival infection in the neonate; however, there is a paucity of information available on infection in the older pre-pubertal child (>3 years of age). We present the case of a 7-year-old girl, referred for assessment at the sexual assault referral centre following the diagnosis of unilateral conjunctivitis. This child underwent a rigorous multiagency child protection process, with input from medical professionals, social services and the police to investigate the possibility of child sexual abuse (CSA).

Early clinical experience of dolutegravir in an HIV cohort in a larger teaching hospital.

Dolutegravir (DTG) is the third HIV integrase inhibitor (INI) available for prescription in Belfast since July 2014. It has shown high virological efficacy in both treatment-naïve and -experienced patients. We carried out a retrospective case chart analysis of HIV-1-positive adults commenced on DTG between July 2014 and September 2015.

Persistent genital arousal and restless genitalia: sexual dysfunction or subtype of vulvodynia?

We conducted a literature review of patients' conditions described under persistent genital arousal disorder and restless genital syndrome, vulvodynia and male genital skin pain of unknown aetiology (penoscrotodynia). Our aim is to improve the understanding of the condition, unify nomenclature and promote evidence-based practice. The most prominent symptom in persistent genital arousal disorder and restless genital syndrome is a spontaneous, unwelcomed, intrusive and distressing vulval sensation.

Clinical care versus ethical obligations: HIV-1 and -2 co-infection with hepatitis B in a pregnant Jehovah's Witness.

Co-infection with HIV-1 and -2 is rare, even in west Africa. We present the case of a 38-year-old pregnant Jehovah's Witness presenting late in pregnancy with triple infection with HIV-1, HIV-2 and hepatitis B virus. There was a successful outcome in averting vertical transmission despite objections to management based on religious and cultural beliefs.
