Purpose: Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection of corneal epithelial cells activates ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), an apical kinase in the host DNA damage response pathway, whose activity is necessary for the progression of lytic HSV-1 infection. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism of ATM activation by HSV-1 in the corneal epithelium, as well as its functional significance.

Methods: Mechanistic studies were performed in cultured human corneal epithelial cell lines (hTCEpi, HCE), as well as in esophageal (EPC2) and oral (OKF6) cell lines.

This investigation was undertaken to evaluate racial and ethnic influences on survival of women with breast cancers and to identify influential factors.

Methods: A population of 766 racially and ethnically defined women with newly diagnosed invasive breast cancers in a clinical practice were prospectively evaluated and observed on a continuing basis.

Cancer of the male breast.

J Gend Specif Med

May 2001

Cancer of the breast in men is an infrequent but serious problem. The epidemiology and clinical features of the disease generally parallel those of breast cancer in women, but affected men tend to be older, have subareolar tumors, and present in more advanced stages. Treatment of men follows the trends for treatment of women, with less radical surgery and more frequent use of systemic adjuvant therapy.

Background: Breast carcinoma in males is infrequent, and information regarding the results of modern treatment is limited. Cases of breast carcinoma in males were accrued from multiple hospitals in one region to determine treatment, survival, and prognostic factors.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 217 cases of breast carcinoma in males accessioned at tumor registries of 18 health care institutions in eastern Wisconsin between 1953 and 1995.
