A randomized study to assess the impact of pharmacist counseling of employer-based health plan beneficiaries with diabetes: the EMPOWER study.

Objective: To assess the impact of pharmacist counseling on empowering people with diabetes to better self-care.

Introduction: Community-based pharmacists can play a key role in educating and empowering people in such programs.

Methods: A randomized trial compared the effects of pharmacist counseling (intervention group) with printed materials (control group) in diabetic beneficiaries of several employer-based health care plans.

Factors influencing the pharmacy faculty workforce.

In 2005, the Council of Faculties and the Council of Deans within the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) formed a task force to review the status of the pharmacy faculty workforce and to identify factors that may influence the supply of and demand for pharmacy faculty members. This manuscript summarizes the Task Force on Faculty Workforce's findings and describes specific strategies needed to address the various issues facing the academy. Based on Task Force predictions, the academy will need approximately 1200 new faculty members over the next 10 years due to the creation of new pharmacy programs, the expansion of existing programs, faculty retirements, and recurring vacant faculty positions.

Patients' perceived benefit from and satisfaction with asthma-related pharmacy services.

Objective: To determine whether patients targeted to receive intervention from an asthma management program reported receiving more services and had greater perceived benefit and satisfaction with those services compared with asthma patients not targeted by the program.

Design: Mailed survey.

Setting: Community pharmacy.
