Modeling the partially coherent behavior of few-mode far-infrared grating spectrometers.

Modeling ultra-low-noise far-infrared grating spectrometers has become crucial for the next generation of far-infrared space observatories. Conventional techniques are awkward to apply because of the partially coherent form of the incident spectral field, and the few-mode response of the optics and detectors. We present a modal technique for modeling the behavior of spectrometers that allows for the propagation and detection of partially coherent fields, and the inclusion of straylight radiated by warm internal surfaces.

An angle-scanned cryogenic Fabry-Pérot interferometer for far-infrared astronomy.

The sensitivity of state-of-the-art superconducting far-infrared detectors used in conjunction with cryogenically cooled space telescopes and instrumentation is such that spectroscopic observations are generally limited by photon noise from the astronomical source or by galactic foreground or zodiacal emission within the field-of-view. Therefore, an instrument design that restricts the spectral bandpass viewed by the detector must be employed. One method of achieving background limited, high resolution spectroscopy is to combine a high resolution component such as a Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) with a lower resolution, post-dispersing system, such as a grating spectrometer, the latter serving to restrict the spectral bandpass.

Reanalysis of the physical and mental health summary scores of dialysis versus conservative care in older patients with advanced chronic kidney disease: a critical appraisal.

Objective: Non-dialytic conservative care is argued to be a reasonable treatment alternative for dialysis in selected older patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. We evaluated patient-relevant outcomes including health-related quality of life in a previous study. However, the scoring algorithm we used to calculate the physical and mental component summary scores of the Short Form-36 (SF-36) turned out to differ from comparable studies on this topic.

Value-based evaluation of dialysis versus conservative care in older patients with advanced chronic kidney disease: a cohort study.

Background: Conservative care is argued to be a reasonable treatment alternative for dialysis in older patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, comparisons are scarce and generally focus on survival only. Comparative data on more patient-relevant outcomes are needed to truly foster shared decision-making on an individual level, and cost comparison is needed to assess value of care.
