Nursing care needs and services utilised by home-dwelling elderly with complex health problems: observational study.

Background: In Norway, as in many Western countries, a shift from institutional care to home care is taking place. Our knowledge is limited regarding which needs for nursing interventions patients being cared for in their home have, and how they are met. We aimed at assessing aspects of health and function in a representative sample of the most vulnerable home-dwelling elderly, to identify their needs for nursing interventions and how these needs were met.

Use of cross-flow membrane filtration in a recirculating hydroponic system to suppress root disease in pepper caused by Pythium myriotylum.

Zoosporic pathogens in the genera Pythium and Phytophthora cause extensive root disease epiphytotics in recirculating hydroponic vegetable-production greenhouses. Zoospore cysts of Pythium myriotylum Drechsler were used to evaluate the effectiveness of cross-flow membrane filters to control pythiaceous pathogens in recirculating hydroponic systems. Four membrane filter brands (Honeycomb, Polypure, Polymate, and Absolife) were tested alone or in combination to determine which filters would effectively remove infective propagules of P.

The effect of mechanical load on degenerated soft tissue.

Objective: To present a form of therapeutic mechanical load, Graston Technique (GT)-an instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization method) in three case studies including supraspinatus tendinosis, Achilles tendinosis, and plantar fasciosis.

Method: In each case study, case history and functional testing confirmed the presence of a condition characterized by degenerated soft tissue. Each condition was treated according to the GT protocol.

Integrative fascial release and functional testing.

Soft tissue techniques, including Integrative Myofascial Release (IFR) can be more effective if the area of treatment can be determined by functional testing. The patient's source of pain may not necessarily be located at the area of complaint and functional testing helps in pinpointing the source. Post-treatment functional testing will provide feedback to both the patient and the doctor as to whether the technique was effective.

Treatment of a case of subacute lumbar compartment syndrome using the Graston technique.

Objective: To discuss subacute lumbar compartment syndrome and its treatment using a soft tissue mobilization technique.

Clinical Features: A patient presented with low back pain related to exercise combined with prolonged flexion posture. The symptoms were relieved with rest and lumbar extension.
