Fusarium head blight (FHB), mainly caused by Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum, is a major wheat disease. Significant efforts have been made to improve resistance to FHB in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), but more work is needed for durum wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. durum).

Mechanical stress regulates various biological processes in cells, tissues, and organs as well as contributes to the pathogenesis of various diseases. The retina is subjected to mechanical stress imposed by intraocular pressure as well as by retinal hemorrhage and edema. Responses to mechanical stress have been studied in retinal pigment epithelial cells and Müller cells of the retina, with the former cells having been found to undergo a stress-induced increase in the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which plays a key role in physiological and pathological angiogenesis in the retina.

Mechanical stimulation as a mimic of drusen formation in the eye increases the expression of angiogenic factors in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated and characterized the effects of mechanical stimulation on the expression of angiogenic factors in RPE cells both in vitro and in a mouse model. Mechanical stimulation increased the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF, encoded by VEGFA) and other angiogenesis-related genes in cultured RPE1 cells.

Surfactant-free polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles, which were colloidally stable in aqueous medium, were successfully synthesized by coupling polymerization of pyrrole using Fe(NO) solids in the absence of any colloidal stabilizer. The pyrrole monomers were gradually supplied from the vapor phase, and the coupling reaction of the monomers could proceed to generate PPy in a water medium. The resulting PPy nanoparticles were extensively characterized in terms of diameter, bulk chemical composition, surface chemistry, and colloidal stability by dynamic light scattering, electron microscopy, elemental microanalysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electrophoresis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
