A comparison of median with mediolateral episiotomy shows that mediolateral episiotomy offers notable advantages resulting naturally from its anatomical course and the possibility of eventual distension. -- The Shute seam is described as a suturing technique in episiotomy still largely unknown in Europe. Apart from easy and rapid suturing and much cleaner wound healing it offers the advantage of significant reduction of pain during childbed with very satisfactory functional and cosmetic results.

According to information available to date from the Federal Statistics Office in the Federal Republic of Germany, pregnancies are still largely terminated by means of cervical dilatation with Hegar dilatators and subsequent curettage. Almost half of all abortions are performed in young women who have not yet given birth.

Our experience with the transcervical extra-amniotic instillation of 70 ml 0.1% Rivanol solution in 154 cases of first trimestre, second trimestre abortions and intra-uterine fetal deaths is reported. This simple and safe method has several advantages which render it suitable for out-patient usage should the rate of therapeutic abortions increase even more.

29 cases of 3rd degree perineal rupture occured from 1962 to 1975 at the Städtische Frauenklinik and Hebammenlehranstalt Braunschweig and have been analysed retrospectively. Most of these were observed in the last five years. The increase is undoubtlessly related to the shorter expulsion peried by ocytocin infusion.
