Phylogenetic and morphological analyses have been conducted on powdery mildew specimens on different and spp. from Asia, Europe and North America. The present study showed that collections of exhibit a high degree of morphological plasticity of the sexual morph, in contrast to their morphologically, rather uniform, asexual morph.

This article gives a comprehensive overview on potentially harmful algae occurring in the built environment. Man-made structures provide diverse habitats where algae can grow, mainly aerophytic in nature. Literature reveals that algae that is potentially harmful to humans do occur in the anthropogenic environment in the air, on surfaces or in water bodies.

The Iceman site is unique in the bryology of the Quaternary. Only 21 bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) grow now in the immediate vicinity of the 5,300 year old Iceman discovery site at 3,210m above sea level in the Ötztal Alps, Italy. By contrast 75 or more species including at least ten liverworts were recovered as subfossils frozen in, on and around the Iceman from before, at and after his time.

A cantilever has been microfabricated for use in non-contact Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) using a very thick magnetic film to actuate the cantilever motion. The thick magnetic block is deposited electrochemically over a defined area of the cantilever. This cantilever is particularly suitable for driving stiff AFM cantilevers in a liquid environment.

We have performed simultaneous force and conductivity measurement of hexadecane liquid confined between a conducting atomic force microscope tip and a graphite surface. Both the current and the force data reveal discrete solvation layering of the hexadecane near the surface. We typically observe that the current does not vary with load in a simple way as the layer closest to the surface is compressed, but increases markedly prior to the expulsion of material from the tip-sample gap.
