Mental Well-being InSciEd Out: Health Partnerships with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico.

Background: Mental health care is a top clinical concern for modern Puerto Rico, especially given a dramatically changing economic landscape paired with recurrent natural disasters. Youth are particularly at-risk due to long-term impacts of toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences on health and development.

Objectives: Here we present a novel clinician-community-educator-scientist partnership to address Puerto Rican youth mental well-being and wellness.

Exposure to Roundup and Antibiotics Alters Gut Microbial Communities, Growth, and Behavior in Tadpoles.

The gut microbiome is important for digestion, host fitness, and defense against pathogens, which provides a tool for host health assessment. Amphibians and their microbiomes are highly susceptible to pollutants including antibiotics. We explored the role of an unmanipulated gut microbiome on tadpole fitness and phenotype by comparing tadpoles of in a control group (1) with tadpoles exposed to: (2) Roundup (glyphosate active ingredient), (3) antibiotic cocktail (enrofloxacin, sulfamethazine, trimethoprim, streptomycin, and penicillin), and (4) a combination of Roundup and antibiotics.

Synergistic interactions of cytarabine-adavosertib in leukemic cell lines proliferation and metabolomic endpoints.

Drug synergy allows reduced dosing, side effects and tolerance. Optimization of drug synergy chemotherapy is fundamental in acute lymphocytic leukemia and other cancers. This study aimed to analyze the pharmacodynamic synergy between the anti-metabolite cytarabine and WEE1 inhibitor adavosertib on acute leukemia cell lines CCRF-CEM and Jurkat.

Pleural Effusion as a Potential Complication of Foreign Body Reaction to Silicone Breast Implants: A Case Study.

Breast augmentation surgery, like any other surgery, has potential complications, including the less common complication of pleural effusion. We present a unique case of a 44-year-old female who developed pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath 10 days after her breast augmentation surgery, with no prior history of cardiac or autoimmune conditions. The temporal relationship between the surgery and the onset of symptoms suggested a possible direct link to the implants.

A Case of Malignant Brenner Tumor of the Ovary Incidentally Found in a Patient with Deep Vein Thrombosis.

We present the case of a 73-year-old woman who was incidentally found to have a malignant Brenner tumor (MBT) of the ovary during an evaluation for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The patient presented with swelling in her left leg, non-healing ulcers, weakness, and numbness in her lower limbs. Imaging studies revealed a large multiloculated cystic mass with areas of calcification in the left adnexa extending to the upper abdomen toward the gallbladder fossa.
