Lymangiomas are congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. They can appear at any age and in any part of the body. In the head and neck area lymangiomas can give rise to functional as well as esthetic problems.

We describe a modification of a previously described assay for the quantification of alpha-synuclein in naive cerebrospinal fluid, which allows for a more efficient quantification of alpha-synuclein. Detection limit of the assay is 3.8 ng/ml and the assay is linear until 300 ng/ml.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of amyloid beta(42) (Abeta(42)) peptides and tau proteins may serve as biomarkers for Alzheimer disease (AD). Recently, the xMAP technology has been introduced as an alternative to ELISA for measurement of these markers.

Methods: We used xMAP assays and ELISA to analyze CSF concentrations of Abeta(42), total tau (t-tau), and tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (p-tau(181)) in samples from 69 patients with Alzheimer disease, 26 patients with vascular dementia, and 55 controls without neurological disorders.

Background: Neurofilament (NF) proteins are major cytoskeletal constituents of neurons. Increased CSF NF levels may reflect neuronal degeneration.

Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of CSF NF analysis to discriminate in relatively young dementia patients between frontotemporal lobe degeneration (FTLD) and early onset Alzheimer's disease (EAD; onset < or = 65 years of age), and in elderly dementia patients between dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and late onset AD (LAD; onset > 65 years of age).

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers in patients with multiple-system atrophy (MSA-C) and idiopathic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA) to find ways to differentiate between the two conditions.
  • Increased levels of neurofilament light chain (NFL) and neurofilament heavy chain (NFHp35) were found in MSA-C patients, while levels of certain neurotransmitter metabolites (like HVA, 5-HIAA, and MHPG) were decreased.
  • Using specific cut-off values for these biomarkers, the researchers achieved high sensitivity and specificity rates for distinguishing MSA-C from ILOCA, suggesting that CSF analysis could play a crucial role in early diagnosis.
