Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites, and they exploit the cellular pathways and resources of their respective host cells to survive and successfully multiply. The strategies of viruses concerning how to take advantage of the metabolic capabilities of host cells for their own replication can vary considerably. The most common metabolic alterations triggered by viruses affect the central carbon metabolism of infected host cells, in particular glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Evidence describing the use of plerixafor in the off-label population of relapsed/refractory germ cell tumors (GCT) is limited. We aim to describe the effect of rescue versus preemptive plerixafor use on apheresis collection days, collection yields, and cost. We retrospectively collected data on 77 consecutive patients (at least 15 years of age) with GCT who underwent peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection for autologous stem cell transplant between January 1, 2020 and May 1, 2022.

Purpose: To analyse single-operation anatomical success (SOAS) of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair by junior vitreoretinal surgeons guided by preoperative individual case selection by an experienced mentor vitreoretinal surgeon.

Methods: Retrospective, single institute, observational study, included all patients who underwent standard pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or combined encircling band (CB) and PPV and gas tamponade in the treatment of RRD from November 2021 to December 2022 were included. Preoperative selection for the surgery decision, whether standard PPV or combined CB & PPV was undertaken through the senior surgeon; according to the location and extensions of the RRD, number of retinal tears (RT) and lens status.

Pediatric apheresis collection of peripheral blood stem cells for autologous transplantation often requires use of a blood prime. We evaluated the relationship between pre-apheresis blood CD34 counts and final CD34 yield with use of a blood prime. Forty patients underwent apheresis stem cell collection in a 5 year period in our hospital, of which 27 required blood priming of the apheresis machine.
