OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of different types of classical music played during a veterinary visit on dog behavior and owner satisfaction. DESIGN Prospective randomized controlled study. ANIMALS 74 dogs examined at a veterinary teaching hospital.

Establishment of blood analyte intervals for laboratory mice and rats by use of a portable clinical analyzer.

Portable clinical analyzers are currently used in human and veterinary medicine for diagnostic testing and blood monitoring; however, normal values for mice and rats of varying genetic backgrounds have not previously been reported. Blood was collected from unanesthetized mice (n = 131) and rats (n = 76) into lithium heparin tubes for analysis using E6+ cartridges for the portable analyzer. Results of glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), sodium, potassium, chloride, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were compared to published ranges provided by a contract diagnostic laboratory.

Ultrasonic tagging of light: theory.

A theory is provided for the detection efficiency of diffuse light whose frequency is modulated by an acoustical wave. We derive expressions for the speckle pattern of the modulated light, as well as an expression for the signal-to-noise ratio for the detector. The aim is to develop a new imaging technology for detection of tumors in humans.

Guided tissue regeneration using a biodegradable barrier membrane for new attachment: a clinical, histologic, and histometric study in dogs.

Although nonbiodegradable barrier membranes have proven partially successful in achieving regeneration of lost periodontium through the principles of guided tissue regeneration, their use requires a second surgical procedure for their removal. The results of a study, in which a biodegradable collagen membrane was used to treat dehiscence defects in dogs, are presented. The membrane was an effective barrier to the downgrowth of gingival epithelium during the early stages of healing and tended to increase the regeneration of new cementum and connective tissue attachment.

Experimental hepatitis E: pathogenesis in cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

The pathogenesis of experimental hepatitis E has not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this study was to more accurately document the events in this disease. Cynomolgus macaques were inoculated intravenously with bile or feces containing hepatitis E virus (HEV).
