Testosterone supplementation and stroke in young adults: a review of the literature.

Testosterone supplementation has increased in recent years for both treatment of hypogonadism and recreational use. Strokes in young adults have similarly increased with a larger proportion of patients in this age group having a stroke due to early onset of cardiovascular risk factors or unrelated to conventional risks. Hormonal treatments are associated with increased stroke risk amongst women, with some studies indicating an increase in stroke risk as high as 40% when compared to non-users.

Information-seeking behaviors of U.S. practicing dental hygienists and full-time dental hygiene educators.

Purpose: This study compared the frequency and variety of information-seeking behaviors used by dental hygiene practitioners and dental hygiene educators to answer practice-related questions. Personal demographic characteristics also were compared between the two groups to determine the characteristics of those with a high level of computer-based information-seeking behaviors.

Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was sent to a national computer generated random sample of 300 practicing dental hygienists and 300 dental hygiene educators.

Effect of an oral health training program on knowledge and behavior of state agency long-term-care surveyors.

This study examines the effect of a training program on long-term-care (LTC) surveyors' knowledge of factors affecting oral health and their behavior in citing oral health deficiencies of LTC residents. Twenty surveyors were recruited for the experimental group, along with a non-equivalent comparison group of 31 surveyors. The experimental group participated in a three-hour interactive, case-based training program.

Polycystic kidney disease: an unrecognized emerging infectious disease?

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is one of the most common genetic diseases in humans. We contend that it may be an emerging infectious disease and/or microbial toxicosis in a vulnerable human subpopulation. Use of a differential activation protocol for the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay showed bacterial endotoxin and fungal (1-->3)-beta-D-glucans in cyst fluids from human kidneys with PKD.
