Risk factors for advanced-stage oral cavity cancer.

Objective: To assess the association between risk factors for inadequate surveillance of oral cavity cancer and stage of disease (localized, T1, T2/N0 vs advanced, T1, T2/N1-3, T3, T4/N0 or N1-3).

Design: Convenience sample from a case series.

Setting: Otolaryngology clinic in a tertiary care hospital.

A comparison of three methods for estimating dental plaque removal from individual teeth.

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of dental plaque removal, in vitro, by physical force. Of the 3 methods used, turbidity was the most sensitive for measuring microgram amounts of plaque. Air-dried weight and dental plaque imprint assays (DPIA) complemented turbidity measurements by providing a weight standard and a new method for visualizing plaque bacterial structure before the stained imprint was transformed into numerical data.

Development of erosive gingival lesions after use of a home care technique.

The use of a periodontal home care regime has been found to induce erosive gingival lesions in some individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine which of the chemical or physical components of the technique might be responsible for the changes observed. Ten normotensive subjects were assigned to two groups.

Local and systemic effects of orally applied sodium salts.

This study determines whether the oral application of a baking soda-3% hydrogen peroxide dentifrice and a nearly saturated sodium chloride mouthwash, as a home care method for treating periodontal disease, creates a sodium burden for human subjects. The dietary intake and urinary excretion of sodium and potassium were monitored in participating subjects. Urinary sodium did not increase in subjects using the method.
