Examination of proposed DSM-5 changes to pathological gambling in a helpline sample.

Objectives: To examine the effect of proposed the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) changes to pathological gambling relative to DSM-IV criteria in a large gambling helpline sample (N = 2,750). Changes in prevalence rates, the diagnostic utility of the illegal acts criterion, and severity of alternative diagnostic formulation thresholds were examined.

Method: Callers to the helpline completed a semistructured interview and DSM-IV criteria were assessed.

Gambling help-lines are an essential access point, or frontline resource, for treatment seeking. This study investigated treatment engagement after calling a gambling help-line. From 2000-2007 over 2,900 unique callers were offered an in-person assessment appointment.

Syntheses of novel myxopyronin B analogs as potential inhibitors of bacterial RNA polymerase.

Based upon observations from our initial findings, additional myxopyronin B analogs have been prepared and tested for in vitro inhibitory activity against DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

The proline-catalyzed direct asymmetric three-component Mannich reaction: scope, optimization, and application to the highly enantioselective synthesis of 1,2-amino alcohols.

We have developed proline-catalyzed direct asymmetric three-component Mannich reactions of ketones, aldehydes, and amines. Several of the studied reactions provide beta-amino carbonyl compounds (Mannich products) in excellent enantio-, diastereo-, regio-, and chemoselectivities. The scope of each of the three components and the influence of the catalyst structure on the reaction are described.

Sodium balance and blood pressure response to salt ingestion in uninephrectomized rats.

The possible role of extracellular volume (ECV) expansion in prandial/postprandial natriuresis was evaluated in control, sham-operated (SO), and uninephrectomized (UNX) male Wistar rats fed a 0.64 (normal salt, NS) or 8 (high salt, HS) g% NaCl diet for seven days after UNX. We thus determined daily NaCl, diet, and water intake and Evans blue and inulin spaces on day 7.
