Purpose: We undertook a screening program between 2016 and 2019 to determine if trachoma was endemic in the Torres Strait Islands of Queensland, Australia.

Methods: Eleven screening surveys assessing trachoma prevalence were undertaken in seven communities using the World Health Organization (WHO) simplified grading tool. Additionally, an ophthalmologist performed a detailed clinical assessment including examination for Herbert's pits and corneal pannus and, where clinically indicated, collection of conjunctival specimens to investigate the presence of nucleic acid.

Objectives: The prevalence of multiple long-term condition (LTC) multimorbidity is increasing with younger onset among socioeconomically deprived populations. Research on life course trajectories towards multimorbidity is limited and early-onset multimorbidity poorly characterised. Understanding sentinel conditions (the first LTC occurring in the life course), the sequence of LTC accrual and the permanency of the reporting of LTCs may help identify time points for prevention efforts.

Case Description: A 9-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was presented for lethargy, decreased appetite, polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD), and severe muscle wasting suggestive of immune-mediated myositis.

Clinical Findings: The horse displayed lethargy, fever, tachyarrhythmia, inappetence, PU/PD, and severe epaxial and gluteal muscle wasting. Clinicopathologic findings were consistent with previously reported cases of systemic calcinosis in horses, including increased muscle enzyme activity, hyperphosphatemia, increased calcium-phosphorus product, hypoproteinemia, and an inflammatory leukogram.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in cats with systemic hypertension (SH) and cardiomyopathy (CM) and how treatments with furosemide or amlodipine affect RAAS levels.
  • It involved 66 cats, including those with SH, advanced CM, and healthy controls, analyzing serum samples for RAAS peptides and aldosterone.
  • Results showed that cats with CM had higher RAAS activity than healthy ones, while untreated SH cats did not show significant changes, but those treated with amlodipine had increased RAAS biomarkers, indicating the treatments influenced RAAS activity.
