Congenital pseudarthrosis of tibia is a genetic, systemic pathology with impaired bone remodeling and unknown pathogenetic mechanisms. Orthopaedic treatment of the disease can fail in some cases. The process of bone remodeling is known to occur under control of local and systemic growth factors, and we sought to explore several osteotropic growth factors, markers of osteogenesis and biologically active molecules in the blood serum of patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of tibia.

Purpose: Nuclear factor-κB activation is implicated in chronic inflammatory disorders and it is a key regulator of genes involved in the response to infection, inflammation and stress. Interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome are common inflammatory disorders of the bladder characterized by frequent urination and bladder pain. The role of nuclear factor-κB activation in bladder inflammation is not well defined.

Intraprostatic leukocyte function may vary depending on local inflammatory or malignant cell microenvironment. Interleukin (IL)-17 producing cells play key roles in chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Little is known about the relevance of IL-17 producing cells at sites of prostate tissue inflammation and/or prostate adenocarcinoma.

Background: Signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat)-3 and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) are important signaling pathways constitutively activated during inflammation. We previously reported that high-fat diet (HFD) intake induces oxidative stress in the prostate through elevated expression of NADPH oxidase subunits causing NF-κB activation. We sought to determine whether Stat-3 is involved in the activation of NF-κB in the prostate as a result of HFD feeding, leading to inflammation.

Background: High-fat diet (HFD) is considered as a major risk factor for benign prostatic diseases and cancer in the Western world. Studies have shown an association between oxidative stress and prostatic diseases. NF-κB has been implicated in stress response and is deregulated in prostrate disorders; therefore, we sought to determine whether HFD could induce oxidative stress in the prostate which could contribute to prostatic diseases.

Objective: Our previous findings have shown that systemic administration of interleukin (IL)-1 beta induces up-regulation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) in mouse prostate tissue that may be responsible for leukocyte extravasation into prostate stroma. It has been hypothesized that NF-kappaB plays a role in the development of prostatitis, and that NF-kappaB activation might provide chemoattractive signals for leukocyte extravasation in the prostate.

Methods: IL-1 beta was administrated intravenously, alone or with dexamethasone (Dex), to separate groups of C57BL/6J mice.

Background: Activation of nuclear-factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) influences the transcription of number of genes, many of which participate in inflammatory responses and tumor development. A wide range of human cancers and inflammatory disorders express inappropriate regulation of NF-kappaB. The role of NF-kappaB in intraprostatic inflammation has not been elucidated.

Prostatitis is a polyetiological inflammation of the prostate gland in men characterized by pelvic pain, irritative voiding symptoms, and sexual dysfunction. Histologically prostatitis is characterized by poly- and mononuclear cell infiltrates (neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages and plasma cells) in the stromal connective tissue around the acini or ducts. Prostatitis is an important worldwide health problem in men.

Purpose: We report LS phenotypes in aged Wistar rats (Charles Rivers, Wilmington, Massachusetts) with EPI.

Materials And Methods: EPI was induced in 36 to 40-week-old male rats by castration with subcutaneous injections of 17beta-estradiol (0.25 mg/kg daily) plus dihydrotestosterone propionate (2.

Purpose: Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis spontaneously develops in aged Lewis and Wistar rats but not in Sprague-Dawley rats. We report the unique profile of lymphocyte subsets present in the healthy Sprague-Dawley rat prostate.

Materials And Methods: We compared enzymatic and mechanical methods of intraprostatic lymphocyte isolation in healthy 8 to 10-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats.

Ninety-two children 5 to 14 years of age living in areas exposed to the radioactive fallout from Chernobyl with recurrent respiratory infections (RRIs) were treated after randomization with either Viscum album praeparatum mali or pini (Iscador M or P). The dosage was two subcutaneous injections a week for 5 weeks with individual doses of 0.001 mg to 1.

Epidemiological studies have found that children living around Chernobyl have rates of respiratory tract illness that are higher than those seen in the area before the Chernobyl accident. The present study investigates the possible effects of radiation exposure on the composition of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in children living around Chernobyl. Two hundred nineteen healthy children and children suffering from recurrent respiratory diseases aged 6-14 years who received both low doses of radiation to the whole body from (137)Cs and various doses of radiation to the thyroid from (131)I as fallout from the accident were assessed 5 (1991) and 8-10 years (1994-1996) after the accident.

We assessed the major lymphocyte subsets in the peripheral blood, thyroid ultrasonography, levels of serum autoantibodies to thyroglobulin (AbTg), thyroid hormones, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in 53 children without any chronic diseases living continuously around Chernobyl. The subjects ranged in age from 7 to 14 years and had different doses of 131I to their thyroid. Healthy children living on noncontaminated areas were assessed as controls.

The major lymphocyte subsets in the peripheral blood were assessed in 120 children 6-13 years old living on areas that received high levels of radioactivity as fallout after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Seventy-one of the children were suffering from recurrent respiratory disease (RRDC) and 49 were not (non-RRDC). As controls, a total of 87 RRDC and non-RRDC living on noncontaminated areas were evaluated.
