The content of gastrin, pituitary thyrotropin hormone (TTH), the thyroid hormones thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), and 11-OCS in blood serum and the daily catecholamine content in urine were studied in 86 patients in the early periods, 2-4 weeks, after resection of the stomach or selective proximal vagotomy (SPV). The content of gastrin, TTH, T4, and 11-OCS in blood was reduced and catecholamine excretion diminished in patients after gastric resection. After SPV the concentration of gastrin increased and that of TTH reduced.

The authors studied the immunological and endocrine status of 296 patients in the early periods, in 2-3 weeks, after resection of the stomach or selective proximal vagotomy for complicated peptic ulcer or inefficacy of nonoperative treatment. Imbalance in the cellular and humoral links of immunity was revealed, which was characterized by the presence of the autoimmune component, depression of the T-lymphocyte system and changes of its functional activity, unbalanced regulatory processes of immunocompetent cells, increase of the humoral link of immunity, diminished biological resistance of the organism, which were manifested to an equal degree in patients who underwent various types of operations. A close correlation of immune and endocrine disorders was revealed.

The authors provide the immunological and radioimmunological data on 148 patients suffering from duodenal ulcer different in size. Material alterations were revealed in the cellular and humoral components of immunity and in the pituitary-thyroid system. Based on the investigations carried out it has been shown that natural therapeutic factors, namely mud applications made according to an original method, being mediated via the endocrine system stimulate the cellular component of immunity, reduce the degree of autoaggression, counteract imbalance of the humoral component of immunity, thereby promoting the acceleration of the restorative and regenerative processes in patients suffering from duodenal ulcer.

Basing on examination of 54 peptic ulcer patients and 62 patients operated on for duodenal ulcer it was shown that collar region is functionally active. In response to physical factors it promotes better regulation of pituitary and thyroid function as shown by radioimmunoassay, thermography and other modern investigating techniques. The findings support administration of physiotherapy on collar region for correction of neurohumoral regulation, trophicity and function of the stomach in ulcer patients.

The bile content of trace elements, prostaglandins and cyclic nucleotides was measured in 66 patients in the early times (from 2 to 3 weeks) after cholecystectomy. In 60 patients, the content of trace elements was measured in blood serum. The above characteristics were found to correlate with the clinical features of the patients.

A study of 102 patients with duodenal ulcers showed a salubrious clinical effect of mud therapy on a course of the disease, alkalizing duodenal function, indices of thyroid hormones, gastrin and blood cyclic nucleotides in 62.7% of cases.
