Objective: To determine whether the ROX index and its variations can predict the risk of intubation in ICU patients receiving NIV ventilation using large public ICU databases.

Design: Retrospective observational cohort study.

Setting: Patient data was extracted from both the AmsterdamUMCdb and the MIMIC-IV ICU databases, which contained data related to 20,109 and 50,920 unique patients.

Seasonal variability and risk evaluation of emerging organic contaminants in European river: linking in silico and in vitro approaches to prioritize hazardous EOCs.

Emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) are a growing concern for aquatic ecosystems, underscoring the need for advanced risk assessment methodologies. This study employed an integrated approach to evaluate the risks associated with 563 EOCs across 13 monitoring sites along the Sava River in Croatia. Sampling was conducted during the winter and spring months, spanning February to May.

Limitations of life-sustaining treatments in intensive care units in Croatia: a multicenter retrospective study.

Aim: In order to gain insight into the current prevailing practices regarding the limitation of life-sustaining treatment in intensive care units (ICUs) in Croatia, we assessed the frequency of limitation and provision of certain treatment modalities, as well as the associated patient and ICU-related factors.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in 17 ICUs in Croatia. We reviewed the medical records of patients deceased in 2017 and extracted data on demographic, clinical, and health care variables.

Although not completely understood, the role of the Hedgehog-GLI (HH-GLI) signaling pathway in melanoma and epithelial skin tumors has been reported before. In this study, we confirmed in various melanoma cell line models that keratin 16 (KRT16) and S100 Calcium-Binding Protein A7 (S100A7) are transcriptional targets of GLI Family Zinc Finger (GLI) proteins. Besides their important role in protecting and maintaining the epidermal barrier, keratins are somehow tightly connected with the S100 family of proteins.

Indicators of stress hematopoiesis in the blood predict COVID-19 progression in patients over 65 years old.

Objectives: Advanced age is a well-established risk factor for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Exacerbated inflammation affects multiple organs, among which hematopoiesis responds by increased output of various cells. We aimed to determine the association between COVID-19 progression and large immature cell (LIC) counts, changes in erythrocyte and platelet distribution widths (RDW, PDW) with reference to patients' age.

Segmental Erythema Multiforme: An Unusual Drug Reaction to Anastrozole.

Erythema multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated, mucocutaneous hypersensitivity syndrome that can occur as a result of various medications, including a wide range of antineoplastic and hormonal drugs. Anastrozole, a nonselective aromatase inhibitor used in breast cancer management has been associated with different cutaneous side effects, of which EM is rarely seen and usually in a minor or major form with typical target lesions. This is a short report of a patient who developed a rare cutaneous side effect after the use of aromatase inhibitor anastrozole - segmental erythema multiforme in cancer-affected area.

Main Clinical Features of Patients with Irritant and Allergic Contact Dermatitis on the Hands in Correlation with Skin CD44 Expression: A Prospective Study.

Contact dermatitis (CD), including its irritant (ICD) and allergic (ACD) types, is a complex, often chronic and therapy-resistant disease that significantly affects patient quality of life and healthcare systems. Objective of this study was to examine the main clinical features of patients with ICD and ACD on the hands through follow-up in correlation with baseline skin CD44 expression. Our prospective study involved 100 patients with hand CD (50 with ACD; 50 with ICD) who initially underwent biopsies of skin lesions with pathohistology, patch tests to contact allergens, and immunohistochemistry for lesional CD44 expression.

The humanised CYP2C19 transgenic mouse exhibits cerebellar atrophy and movement impairment reminiscent of ataxia.

Aims: CYP2C19 transgenic mouse expresses the human CYP2C19 gene in the liver and developing brain, and it exhibits altered neurodevelopment associated with impairments in emotionality and locomotion. Because the validation of new animal models is essential for the understanding of the aetiology and pathophysiology of movement disorders, the objective was to characterise motoric phenotype in CYP2C19 transgenic mice and to investigate its validity as a new animal model of ataxia.

Methods: The rotarod, paw-print and beam-walking tests were utilised to characterise the motoric phenotype.

A new set of microsatellite markers for Phoxinus lumaireul senso lato, Phoxinus marsilii and Phoxinus krkae for population and molecular taxonomic studies.

Minnows of the genus Phoxinus are common and an often highly abundant fish species in Palearctic freshwater habitats. Phoxinus species have a complex evolutionary history, phylogenetic relationships are not well understood and there are a number of unresolved taxonomic problems. There are currently 23 different mitochondrial genetic lineages identified in the genus Phoxinus, 13 of which are recognized as valid species.

CAN SKIN BE A MARKER FOR INTERNAL MALIGNANCY? EVIDENCE FROM CLINICAL CASES.

Although there are many single case reports on paraneoplastic dermatoses in the literature, there are very rare articles containing multiple cases. A retrospective study was performed to examine paraneoplastic dermatoses and accompanying malignancies based on skin manifestations and appropriate diagnostic evaluations. We recorded outcomes, current conditions, and surgical/oncologic treatments.

COVID-19 Lockdowns-Effect on Concentration of Pharmaceuticals and Illicit Drugs in Two Major Croatian Rivers.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, contingency measures in the form of lockdowns were implemented all over the world, including in Croatia. The aim of this study was to detect if those severe, imposed restrictions of social interactions reflected on the water quality of rivers receiving wastewaters from urban areas. A total of 18 different pharmaceuticals (PhACs) and illicit drugs (IDrgs), as well as their metabolites, were measured for 16 months (January 2020-April 2021) in 12 different locations at in the Sava and Drava Rivers, Croatia, using UHPLC coupled to LCMS.

REVIEW OF THE BLADDER CANCER MOLECULAR CLASSIFICATION PROPOSED: A NEW ERA - NEW TAXONOMY.

The management of bladder cancer patients largely depends on pathologic staging and grading, and current morphological classification does not always show the individual patient's risk. Despite modern surgical techniques, pre- and postoperative therapies, clinical outcomes of these patients have not changed over decades. Today, there are new biomarkers for bladder cancer showing changes in tumor biology and progression, as a result of changes in the pathways affecting cell signaling, proliferation, apoptosis, epigenetic changes, angiogenesis, and modulation of host immune response.

Impact of quality of response on survival outcomes among multiple myeloma patients treated with novel agents - a retrospective analysis.

Background: In this era of target therapies, novel data on the correlation between response endpoints and survival outcomes in multiple myeloma have arisen.

Objective: To determine the impact of quality of response on clinical outcomes, using first-line treatment, and identify risk factors influencing progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) among myeloma patients.

Design And Setting: Retrospective analysis on myeloma patients who were treated at the Clinic of Hematology and Clinical Immunology, University Clinical Centre, Niš, Serbia, over a four-year period.

Experiences and attitudes of medical professionals on treatment of end-of-life patients in intensive care units in the Republic of Croatia: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Decisions about limitations of life sustaining treatments (LST) are made for end-of-life patients in intensive care units (ICUs). The aim of this research was to explore the professional and ethical attitudes and experiences of medical professionals on treatment of end-of-life patients in ICUs in the Republic of Croatia.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among physicians and nurses working in surgical, medical, neurological, and multidisciplinary ICUs in the total of 9 hospitals throughout Croatia using a questionnaire with closed and open type questions.

Acute leukemia and SARS-CoV-2 infection: clinical characteristics and risk factors for mortality.

Patients with acute leukemia (AL) have a high mortality rate from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, studies including patients with AL and COVID-19 are few. Fifty-one patients with AL and COVID-19 were included in our study.

Infertility is one of the major medical problems nowadays. Couples who opt for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) face a great deal of stress which certainly affects the outcome of the procedure. Therefore, we aimed to reduce the stress during the oocyte retrieval procedure by applying midazolam.

Potential role of IFN-γ and IL-5 in sepsis prediction of preterm neonates.

Not fully maturated immune system in preterm neonates may contribute to the increased susceptibility to infection. The levels of some cytokines can be useful in the prediction and diagnosis of sepsis in premature neonates. In the present study, we evaluated the potential predictive role of IFN-γ and IL-5 in cord and venous blood, together with the determination of C-reactive protein and procalcitonin (PCT) for sepsis development in premature neonates.

Background: Previous research using animal models demonstrated that CD44 expression may contribute to directing inflammatory cells into skin lesions during inflammation development in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).

Objectives: To examine CD44 expression in patients with ACD and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), and to compare it to patients with psoriatic lesions and healthy controls' (HCs) skin.

Methods: This study included 200 patients comprising four groups of 50 each: ACD, ICD, psoriasis vulgaris, and HCs.

Description of a new species of Phoxinus from the upper Krka River (Adriatic Basin) in Croatia (Actinopterygii: Leuciscidae), first discovered as a molecular clade.

Using morphometric, meristic and qualitative characters, we confirmed a specific status of a clade discovered based on molecular data only. The newly described species Phoxinus krkae has a very local distribution in the upper Krka River but is easily morphologically distinguished from geographically neighbouring species with much wider ranges: Phoxinus lumaireul, Phoxinus marsilii and Phoxinus csikii. Phoxinus krkae is well differentiated in statistical analyses and differs from other species of Phoxinus in northern Adriatic Sea drainages and right-bank tributaries of the middle and lower River Danube by a combination of characters, none of them unique: caudal peduncle length 1.
