Staff who provided financial navigation support services to cancer patients were interviewed from different types of cancer programs across seven states representing rural, micropolitan, and urban settings.

Objectives: The goal of the study was to investigate prelinguistic consonant production and the influence of vocalizations that co-occurred with object mouthing on consonant production in infants with profound sensorineural hearing loss before and after cochlear implantation to advance knowledge of early speech development in infants with profound hearing loss.

Recognizing and Managing Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome in the Emergency Department.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a superficial blistering disorder caused by exfoliative toxin-releasing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial toxins are released hematogenously, and after a prodromal fever and exquisite tenderness of skin, patients present with tender erythroderma and flaccid bullae with subsequent superficial generalized exfoliation. The head-to-toe directed exfoliation lasts up to 10 to 14 days without scarring after proper treatment.

Nucleocapsid mutations in SARS-CoV-2 augment replication and pathogenesis.

Unlabelled: While SARS-CoV-2 continues to adapt for human infection and transmission, genetic variation outside of the spike gene remains largely unexplored. This study investigates a highly variable region at residues 203-205 in the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. Recreating a mutation found in the alpha and omicron variants in an early pandemic (WA-1) background, we find that the R203K+G204R mutation is sufficient to enhance replication, fitness, and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2.

How cancer programs identify and address the financial burdens of rural cancer patients.

Purpose: Financial toxicity is associated with negative patient outcomes, and rural populations are disproportionately affected by the high costs of cancer care compared to urban populations. Our objective was to (1) understand cancer programs' perceptions of rural-urban differences in cancer patients' experiences of financial hardship, (2) evaluate the resources available to cancer patients across the rural-urban continuum, and (3) determine how rural and urban health care teams assess and address financial distress in cancer patients.

Methods: Seven research teams within the Cancer Prevention and Research Control Network conducted semi-structured interviews with cancer program staff who have a role in connecting cancer patients with financial assistance services in both rural and urban counties.

Recent advances in combating Nipah virus.

Over the past 20 years, Nipah virus (NiV) has emerged as a significant, highly pathogenic bat-borne paramyxovirus causing severe respiratory disease and encephalitis in humans, and human-to-human transmission has been demonstrated in multiple outbreaks. In addition to causing serious illness in humans, NiV is a zoonotic pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of other mammalian species, including pigs and horses. While NiV has caused less than 700 human cases since its discovery in 1998/1999, the involvement of intermediate agricultural hosts can result in significant economic consequences.

Night-time Screen Media Use in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

This prospective observational study quantified screen media use within the night-time pre-sleep period in a pediatric intensive care unit and postulated possible implications. Seventy-five patients between the ages of newborn to 19 years old were observed 5 evenings per week for 3 weeks. Trained observers documented the patient's screen use, type of screen used, screen engagement, sleep state, light level, and parental presence.

Epigenomic diversity of cortical projection neurons in the mouse brain.

Neuronal cell types are classically defined by their molecular properties, anatomy and functions. Although recent advances in single-cell genomics have led to high-resolution molecular characterization of cell type diversity in the brain, neuronal cell types are often studied out of the context of their anatomical properties. Multifactorial causal beliefs and colorectal cancer screening: A structural equation modeling investigation.

We tested a conceptual model that describes the relationship between individuals' understanding of the multifactorial nature of cancer and their self-reported colorectal cancer screening. We collected cross-sectional survey data from 205 men and women age 50-75. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
