This work describes the synthesis and characterization of new quinolone-benzothiazole hybrids, the study of their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, and the use of these systems as efficient fluorescent probes for cyanide ions. These conjugated derivatives are linked through a double bond favoring electronic communication, and together with their planar geometry, can strongly aggregate under solvophobic environments, leading to aggregation and exhibiting significant AIE behavior. The double bond between electroactive units is prone to nucleophilic addition reactions by cyanide ions, selectively, conducive to turning off the fluorescence properties, making this hybrid system an efficient probe for cyanide ions.

The β-amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) inhibitor JNJ-54861911, a candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, was withdrawn from clinical trials due to drug-induced liver injury (DILI). This paper describes our investigation of the metabolism of JNJ-54861911 to understand the potential contribution to the observed DILI. In human hepatocytes, JNJ-54861911 is metabolized by CYP450 3A4 to a reactive intermediate (RI), which undergoes glutathione (GSH) addition at C6 of the 2-amino-4-methyl-1,3-thiazin-4-yl moiety via glutathione S-transferase α1 (GSTA1) catalysis.

Shift work can cause circadian misalignment, which often results in sleeping problems and has been associated with immune dysfunction. To better understand the impact of shift work on a primary immune response to vaccination, we compared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific humoral and cellular immune responses after one injection of the messenger RNA (mRNA)-1273 vaccine between day workers (n = 24) and night shift workers (n = 21). In addition, duration and quality of sleep were assessed for a period of 7 days around the time of vaccination using actigraphy and daily sleep diaries, and their relationship with immunogenicity of mRNA-1273 vaccination was studied.

Since the introduction of H3N2 influenza A viruses in the human population, these viruses have continuously evolved to escape human immunity, with mutations occurring in and around the receptor binding site. This process, called antigenic drift, recently resulted in viruses that recognize elongated glycans that are not abundantly displayed in the human respiratory tract. Such receptor specificities hampered our ability to pick and propagate vaccine strains.

Production of xylitol from agricultural by-products offers a promising approach for the circular bioeconomy. This study investigates the roles of transcription factors XlnR and CreA in xylitol production from wheat bran in Aspergillus niger by generating strains with a constitutively active XlnR (XlnR, V756F mutation) and/or deletion of creA, in a previously generated xylitol-producing strain. The XlnR mutation increased the initial rate of xylitol production but lowered the overall accumulation.

Xerophilic fungi occupy versatile environments owing to their rich arsenal helping them successfully adapt to water constraints as a result of low relative humidity, high-osmolarity, and high-salinity conditions. The general term xerophilic fungi relates to organisms that tolerate and/or require reduced water activity, while halophilic and osmophilic are applied to specialized groups that require high salt concentrations or increased osmotic pressure, respectively. Species belonging to the family Aspergillaceae, and especially those classified in Aspergillus subgenus Aspergillus (sections Restricti and Aspergillus) and Polypaecilum, are particularly enriched in the group of osmophilic and salt-tolerant filamentous fungi.

Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we searched multiple databases for studies (until July 1, 2024) with T2D complications as outcome. Background: Netherton syndrome (NS) is a rare, severe genetic skin disorder, currently classified as an inborn error of immunity (IEI) due to previously reported immune dysregulation. We recently reported the results of an immunological evaluation showing no evidence for a relevant B- and/or T-cell mediated immunodeficiency, but immune responses after vaccination were not evaluated in that study. Therefore, we evaluated immune responses to three vaccine platforms in adult NS patients to further investigate the presence of a clinically relevant B- and/or T-cell immunodeficiency.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were introduced to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This also resulted in a reduction of notifications of other acute respiratory infections and an altered seasonality when NPIs were lifted. Without circulation of pathogens, waning of antibodies is expected, which is a first indicator of decreased immunity.
