Background: An early warning scoring system aims to detect clinical deterioration at an early stage and prevent failure-to-rescue in hospitalized patients. In this systematic review we studied the effect of an early warning scoring system on adverse outcome in surgical patients.
Methods: This review was conducted and reported according to PRISMA and the protocol of this review is registered at PROSPERO, under the registration number CRD42018107799.
This work describes the synthesis and characterization of new quinolone-benzothiazole hybrids, the study of their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, and the use of these systems as efficient fluorescent probes for cyanide ions. These conjugated derivatives are linked through a double bond favoring electronic communication, and together with their planar geometry, can strongly aggregate under solvophobic environments, leading to aggregation and exhibiting significant AIE behavior. The double bond between electroactive units is prone to nucleophilic addition reactions by cyanide ions, selectively, conducive to turning off the fluorescence properties, making this hybrid system an efficient probe for cyanide ions.

To better understand the impact of shift work on a primary immune response to vaccination, we compared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-specific humoral and cellular immune responses after one injection of the messenger RNA (mRNA)-1273 vaccine between day workers (n = 24) and night shift workers (n = 21). In addition, duration and quality of sleep were assessed for a period of 7 days around the time of vaccination using actigraphy and daily sleep diaries, and their relationship with immunogenicity of mRNA-1273 vaccination was studied.

Production of xylitol from agricultural by-products offers a promising approach for the circular bioeconomy. This study investigates the roles of transcription factors XlnR and CreA in xylitol production from wheat bran in Aspergillus niger by generating strains with a constitutively active XlnR (XlnR, V756F mutation) and/or deletion of creA, in a previously generated xylitol-producing strain. The XlnR mutation increased the initial rate of xylitol production but lowered the overall accumulation.

Xerophilic fungi occupy versatile environments owing to their rich arsenal helping them successfully adapt to water constraints as a result of low relative humidity, high-osmolarity, and high-salinity conditions. The general term xerophilic fungi relates to organisms that tolerate and/or require reduced water activity, while halophilic and osmophilic are applied to specialized groups that require high salt concentrations or increased osmotic pressure, respectively. Species belonging to the family Aspergillaceae, and especially those classified in Aspergillus subgenus Aspergillus (sections Restricti and Aspergillus) and Polypaecilum, are particularly enriched in the group of osmophilic and salt-tolerant filamentous fungi.

We recently reported the results of an immunological evaluation showing no evidence for a relevant B- and/or T-cell mediated immunodeficiency, but immune responses after vaccination were not evaluated in that study. This also resulted in a reduction of notifications of other acute respiratory infections and an altered seasonality when NPIs were lifted. Without circulation of pathogens, waning of antibodies is expected, which is a first indicator of decreased immunity.
