This meeting report provides an overview of the highlights of the Bronchitis XI international symposium, held in June 2024 in Groningen, The Netherlands. The theme of this year's symposium was "heterogeneity of lung disease in a changing environment," and the symposium contained five different sessions focused on (i) heterogeneity of chronic lung disease, (ii) environmental changes with impact on lung disease, (iii) the aging lung, (iv) bronchitis, and (v) innovative therapy. The highlights from each of these sessions will be discussed separately, providing an overview of latest studies, new data, and enthralling discussions.

The Dutch Citizen's Understanding and Perception of the Actors Involved in the Netherlands' COVID-19 Pandemic Response: A Focus Group Study During the First Pandemic Wave.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic was a public health emergency (PHE) of unprecedented magnitude and impact. It provided the possibility to investigate the Dutch citizens' understanding and perception of the actors involved in the Dutch pandemic response as a PHE unfolded.

Methods: Three focus groups (FGs) were held with 16 Dutch citizens in June 2020.

Objective: When extremely premature birth at the limits of viability is imminent, shared decision-making with parents regarding the infant's treatment is widely recommended. Aligning decisions with parental values can be challenging. So, this study aims to get insight into (1) what values parents considered important in their decision, (2) whether their decision was based on intuition and/or rational analysis and (3) parental suggestions on how to help explore and articulate values during prenatal counselling.

Imaging and Quantification of the Hepatic Vasculature of Mice Using Ultrafast Doppler Ultrasound.

Non-invasive in vivo imaging of the vasculature is a powerful tool for studying disease mechanisms in rodents. To achieve high sensitivity imaging of the microvasculature using Doppler ultrasound methods, imaging modalities employing the concept of ultrafast imaging are preferred. By increasing the frame rate of the ultrasound scanner to thousands of frames per second, it becomes possible to improve the sensitivity of the blood flow down to 2 mm/s and to obtain functional information about the microcirculation in comparison to a sensitivity of around 1 cm/s in conventional Doppler modes.

Both were randomized, participant- and investigator-blinded, placebo-controlled, single and multiple ascending oral doses, parallel group, clinical studies in healthy volunteers.

This study investigates the initial effectiveness and feasibility of self-administered virtual reality in postsurgical pain management.

Methods: Patients reporting a postsurgical pain score ≥4 were randomized for control or VR, stratified for 3 interventions with varying levels of immersion and interaction.
