2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipiridinium chloride (paraquat) are among the most widely used herbicides and are known to be toxic. Fabrication of green adsorbents which are capable of removing both herbicides remains a challenge. Here, we fabricate a novel adsorbent from tropical waste wood and use a facile, chitosan-mediated N-heteroatom functionalization technique to augment surface nitrogen and improve specific surface area.

Naphthenic acids, NAs, are a major contaminant of concern and a focus of much research around remediation of oil sand process affected waters, OSPW. Using activated carbon adsorbents are an attractive option given their low cost of fabrication and implementation. A deeper evaluation of the effect NA structural differences have on uptake affinity is warranted.

Background: In a considerable proportion of anaemic children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), haemoglobin (Hb) does not normalise after iron therapy. We evaluated the added value of novel iron markers (hepcidin and soluble transferrin receptor [sTfR]) as compared to traditional iron markers (ferritin and transferrin saturation [TSAT]) to determine the best strategy for the prediction of non-responsiveness to iron suppletion.

Methods: In this secondary analysis of prospectively collected data, we measured iron markers in anaemic children (Hb Z-score < -2.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the top cause of chronic liver disease in children and has significant health implications, highlighting the need for better clinical management and unified guidelines.
  • A study surveyed 454 pediatricians across Europe and Israel, revealing that only 51% follow any guidelines, with 63% believing the guidelines require updates due to varied practices.
  • Most pediatricians use liver function tests and ultrasounds for screening, but there is inconsistency in treatment methods, with only 17% often requesting liver biopsies, indicating a crucial need for standardized approaches to manage MASLD in children.

Background And Objective: Coeliac disease is a chronic, immune-mediated disorder for which the only treatment consists of lifelong strict adherence to gluten-free diet (GFD). However, there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines on the GFD dietary management of coeliac disease. This position paper, led by the Special Interest Group in coeliac disease of the European Society of Pediatric, Gastroenterology Hepatology, and Nutrition, supported by the Nutrition Committee and the Allied Health Professionals Committee, aims to present evidence-based recommendations on the GFD as well as how to support dietary adherence.

Microbial cells must continually adapt their physiology in the face of changing environmental conditions. Archaea living in extreme conditions, such as saturated salinity, represent important examples of such resilience. The model salt-loving organism Haloferax volcanii exhibits remarkable plasticity in its morphology, biofilm formation, and motility in response to variations in nutrients and cell density.

Purpose: Bariatric surgery is regarded as a valuable treatment option for adolescents with severe obesity. However, high-quality evidence of its superiority over prolonged conservative treatment with multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention (MLI) is limited. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of bariatric surgery in adolescents without sufficient weight loss after MLI for severe obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep duration is linked to overweight/obesity risk and may influence liver health, particularly fatty liver in children and adolescents aged 2-18, studied through various measurements in a sample of 854 participants.
  • Higher hepatic steatosis index, a marker for fatty liver, is associated with obesity compared to overweight conditions, with pear-shaped body fat distribution potentially worsening liver fat accumulation.
  • The study found that sleep time can mediate the relationship between body fat distribution and liver health, suggesting improving sleep may help manage fatty liver disease in youth.

Chemical activation of waste materials, to form activated carbon, (AC) is complicated by the large amounts of chemical activating agents required and wastewater produced. To address these problems, we have developed an optimized process for producing AC, by phosphoric acid activation of construction waste. Waste wood from construction sites was ground and treated with an optimized phosphoric acid digestion and activation that resulted in high surface areas (> 2000 m/g) and a greater recovery of phosphoric acid.

The efficacy of metal-impregnated petroleum coke (PC) activated carbon for the adsorption of arsenite and arsenate in acidic waters is investigated in this study. Unmodified PC activated carbon, FeCl-loaded activated carbon, KMnO-loaded activated carbon, and a mixed FeCl-KMnO-loaded activated carbon were used for evaluation. The surface characteristics of the activated carbons before and after arsenic adsorption were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Formation of activated carbon from petroleum coke by KOH, results in high specific surface area materials that are predominantly microporous. This initial microporosity means that the adsorption kinetics of target species are not as rapid as they could be, thus limiting environmental remediation applications for the material. To address this problem a series of additional heat cycles with no additional chemical inputs were applied after activation but prior to the removal of activating agents.

Histone proteins are found across diverse lineages of , many of which package DNA and form chromatin. However, previous research has led to the hypothesis that the histone-like proteins of high-salt-adapted archaea, or halophiles, function differently. The sole histone protein encoded by the model halophilic species Halobacterium salinarum, HpyA, is nonessential and expressed at levels too low to enable genome-wide DNA packaging.
