Focal therapy and partial gland ablation prioritize the precise elimination of the index lesion and a surrounding safety margin to optimize treatment outcomes and lower the risk of residual disease. The PRESERVE study (NCT04972097) aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the NanoKnife System to ablate prostate tissue in patients with intermediate-risk prostate cancer (PCa). The NanoKnife uses irreversible electroporation (IRE) to deliver high-voltage electrical pulses to change the permeability of cell membranes, leading to cell death. Delayed proximal ureteral stricture (DPUS) after nephron-sparing treatment (partial nephrectomy [PN] and image-guided percutaneous ablation) of renal masses is a rare complication that occurs because of an unrecognized injury to the proximal ureter and/or its associated vascular supply. We present a multi-institutional series of patients who developed DPUS after nephron-sparing treatment and review relevant tumor characteristics, timing of DPUS presentation, presenting symptoms, and outcome of stricture management.
