Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a serious concern in aging individuals, but has not been explored for its potential to alter the shape of the inner ear by way of increased remodeling in the otic capsule. The otic capsule, or bony labyrinth, is thought to experience uniquely limited remodeling after development due to high levels of osteoprotegerin. On this basis, despite the widespread remodeling that accompanies osteoporosis, we hypothesize that both the shape and volume of the semicircular canals will resist such changes.

A single center experience in the management of progressive juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma.

Background: Juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (JPA) typically follows an indolent clinical course. The first-line treatment for most JPAs is surgical resection. However, a gross total resection may not be feasible for deep-seated lesions and/or infiltrative tumors, leading to multimodal treatment approaches that may be complicated by patient age and tumor location.

Salvage Therapy for Childhood Medulloblastoma: A Single Center Experience.

Introduction: Children diagnosed with medulloblastoma (MB) who are refractory to upfront therapy or experience recurrence have very poor prognoses. Although phase I and phase II trials exist, these treatments bear significant treatment-related morbidity and mortality.

Methods: A retrospective review of children diagnosed with a recurrence of MB from 2002 to 2015 at McMaster University was undertaken.

Clinic-based depression screening in lung cancer patients using the PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 depression questionnaires: a pilot study.

Objectives: This study aims to validate the ability to perform depression screening with the patient health questionnaire (PHQ)-2 and PHQ-9 depression modules in a busy, outpatient practice, and to evaluate the prevalence of depression among lung cancer outpatients at our institution.

Methods: In 2010, 64 patients in a thoracic malignancy clinic completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-2. Patients endorsing either one or both items were then given the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, a nine-item depression assessment tool.

Thanatopractical processing allows morphological reconstruction of even advanced decayed bodies. By extracting fluids from the body's tissue antemortem tenseness and volume can be restored. If bodies are partly subject to thanatopractical processing in the hand region ("Thanatoprint"), fingerprints of high quality can be gathered even in cases of advanced decay.

Development and commercial use of Bollgard cotton in the USA--early promises versus today's reality.

Bollgard cotton is the trademark given to a number of varieties of cotton bio-engineered to produce an insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). When produced by the modified cotton plants, this protein controls certain lepidopterous cotton insect pests. Commercially available since 1996, these cotton varieties are purchased under a license agreement in which the growers pay a fee and agree to abide by the terms, which include a 1-year license to use the technology and agreement to participate in an insect resistance management program.

Polymerization with the argon laser: curing time and shear bond strength.

The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of an argon laser in polymerizing a light-cured orthodontic adhesive. Metal brackets were bonded to 185 premolars, divided into 5 different protocol groups of 37 each as follows: light 40-second buccal, light 40-second lingual, laser 5-second lingual, laser 10-second lingual, and laser 15-second lingual. All bonded specimens were placed in distilled water for 30 days at 37 degrees C followed by thermal cycling for 24 hours.

Human PBMC from HIV-1-infected individuals produced ex vivo in response to vesicular stomatitis virus only low amounts of IFN-alpha. This impairment was significant as early as Walter Reed (WR) stage 2; at WR stage 4-5, the production was almost zero. At WR stage 2 of infection, IFN-alpha mRNA was exclusively found in association with polyribosomes, indicating that IFN-alpha gene was transcriptionally inactive under the experimental conditions used.

Active immunization of homosexual men using a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine.

Twenty homosexual men [13 anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive, seven anti-HIV negative] without HBsAg, anti-HBs, and anti-HBc were vaccinated with three 20 micrograms doses of a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. All anti-HIV-positive homosexuals were nonresponders independent of the initial number of CD4-positive cells. Among seven anti-HIV-negative individuals, five responded.

Treatment of chronic type B hepatitis with recombinant alpha-interferon induces autoantibodies not specific for autoimmune chronic hepatitis.

Recombinant human alpha-interferon is now under intensive investigation as therapy for chronic Type B hepatitis. Recent reports have suggested that prolonged alpha-interferon therapy may induce autoimmune reactions.
