The addition of alkali or silver salts of dicyanoamide (dca), tricyanomethanide (tcm) and tetracyanoborate (tcb) to a solution of B(C(6)F(5))(3) in diethyl ether affords salts containing very voluminous B(C(6)F(5))(3) adduct anions of the type [E(CN)(n)(-)] x [B(C(6)F(5))(3)](n): E = N (dca_nb with n = 1, 2; b = B(C(6)F(5))(3)); E = C (tcm_nb with n = 1, 2, 3), and E = B (tcb_nb with n = 1, 2, 3, 4). Salts bearing these anions such as B[(CN) x B(C(6)F(5))(3)](4)(-) (= [B(CN)(4)(-)] x [B(C(6)F(5))(3)](4)), C[(CN) x B(C(6)F(5))(3)](3)(-) (= [C(CN)(3)(-)] x [B(C(6)F(5))(3)](3)), and N[(CN) x B(C(6)F(5))(3)](2)(-) (=[N(CN)(2)(-)] x [B(C(6)F(5))(3)](2)) can be prepared in good yields. They are thermally stable up to over 200 degrees C and dissolve in polar organic solvents.

Background: Tau protein exists as six different isoforms that differ by the inclusion or exclusion of exons 2, 3 and 10. Exon 10 encodes a microtubule binding repeat, thereby resulting in three isoforms with three microtubule binding repeats (3R) and three isoforms that have four microtubule binding repeats (4R). In normal adult brain, the relative amounts of 3R tau and 4R tau are approximately equal.

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by the fungus F. verticillioides, a common contaminant of maize (corn) worldwide. Maternal consumption of fumonisin B(1)-contaminated maize during early pregnancy has recently been associated with increased risk for neural tube defects (NTDs) in human populations that rely heavily on maize as a dietary staple.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) may cause recurrent headaches, seizures, and hemorrhagic stroke and have been associated with loss-of-function mutations in CCM1/KRIT1, CCM2, and CCM3/programmed cell death 10 (PDCD10). The CCM3/PDCD10 amino acid sequence does not reveal significant homologies to protein domains with known structure. With the help of the only published human in-frame deletion of the CCM3 gene (c.

Laboratory bidirectional reflectance and polarization measurements were carried out on packed layers of both natural sediments and manufactured spherical particles. The results indicate that among the natural sediments showing a strong backscattering peak ("hotspot"), the rough platelets are the only sediments with a negative polarization effect. Measurements of circular and linear polarization ratios indicate that both smooth ooids and rough platelets are strongly depolarizing.

Fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)) is a mycotoxin that inhibits ceramide synthases (CerS) and causes kidney and liver toxicity and other disease. Inhibition of CerS by FB(1) increases sphinganine (Sa), Sa 1-phosphate, and a previously unidentified metabolite. Analysis of the latter by quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry assigned an m/z = 286.

The clinical and radiological features, surgical treatment, and outcome of two cats with traumatically induced dislocation of the lumbosacral joint are described in this report. The dislocation of the lumbosacral joint was concurrent with dorsal luxation of the articular facets in both cases. Open reduction, followed by stabilization with a dorsal suture sling, resulted in a good clinical outcome.

This study describes the appearance of 'joint mice' in the sheath of the deep digital flexor muscle tendon (DDFT) due to osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions in the talocrural joint of 12 dogs. Surgical excision of all free fragments in the DDFT sheath was performed in five dogs, and their clinical progression was documented. The excision of free fragments from the DDFT sheath, but not arthro-tomy, proved clinically beneficial despite the presence of degenerative joint disease.

Corn grits spiked with 30 microg/g fumonisin B1 and two batches of grits fermented with Fusarium verticillioides (batch 1 contained 33 microg/g, and batch 2 contained 48 microg/g fumonisin B1), which were extruded by a single-screw extruder with and without glucose (10%, dry weight basis) supplementation were fed to rats. Control groups were fed uncontaminated grits. Extrusion with glucose more effectively reduced fumonisin B1 concentrations of the grits (75 to 85%) than did extrusion alone (10 to 28%).

Intracellular calcium is an important second messenger that regulates many cell functions. Recent studies have shown that calcium ions can also regulate the cellular responses to ionizing radiation. However, previous data are restricted to cells treated with low-LET radiations (X rays, gamma rays and beta particles).

Stillbirths and spontaneous abortions can result when pregnant women are exposed to the food borne pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes. Fetuses and neonates account for one-third of the 2500 cases annually. The objectives were to determine the dose dependent trends of immunological and pathological effects in pregnant guinea pigs after infection with L.

The toxic potential of nixtamalized foods can be underestimated if, during cooking, reversible fumonisin-food matrix interactions reduce the amount of mycotoxin that is detected but not the amount that is bioavailable. Fusarium verticillioides culture material (CM) was nixtamalized as is (NCM) or after mixing with ground corn (NCMC). Additional portions were sham nixtamalized without (SCM) or with corn (SCMC).

This report describes the temporary fixation of a traumatic shoulder luxation in a large-breed dog using a 3.5-mm Locking Round-Hole Reconstruction Plate (LRHRP) to provide stable internal splinting, allowing healing of the injured ligaments, joint capsule, glenohumeral ligaments, tendons, and muscles for restoration of joint stability. The use of a temporary plate with a locking system should be considered as an option in the treatment of canine shoulder joint luxations with severe tissue damage.

Measurements of the magnitude and spectral distribution of the Raman-scattering coefficients of pure water (b(rw)) and seawater (b(rs)) are presented. Two independent measurements of the spectral distribution of the Raman-scattering coefficient of pure water were made for incident wavelengths ranging from 250 to 500 nm. These measurements revealed a strong dependence of b(rw) on wavelength that could be represented by a (lambda')(-5.

We have further developed and improved the prototype oceanic Fraunhofer line discriminator by using a well-protected fiber-optic-wire cable and in-water electronic housing. We conducted a series of in situ measurements in clear ocean water in the Florida Straits. By comparing the reduced data with the Monte Carlo simulation results, we verify the Raman scattering coefficient B(r) with an excitation wavelength at 488 nm to be 2.
