Amylostereum areolatum is a filamentous fungus that grows through tip extension, branching and hyphal fusion. In the homokaryotic phase, the hyphae of different individuals are capable of fusing followed by heterokaryon formation, only if they have dissimilar allelic specificities at their mating-type (mat) loci. In turn, hyphal fusion between heterokaryons persists only when they share the same alleles at all of their heterokaryon incompatibility (het) loci.

Surgical removal of an infected aortic endoprosthesis using a wire cutter.

The purpose of this study is to report a new method of removing an infected endoprosthesis from the abdominal aorta using a wire cutter. A 65-year-old man with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm was admitted to our hospital. He was treated with an endovascular abdominal endoprosthesis and discharged one week later.

In order to use whole eukaryotic cells as an active element in the detection and amplification of biological signals, for both in vitro and in vivo applications, we have undertaken a first approach to interface live cells and integrated circuit, and evaluate the possibility to develop a microbioreactor. An amplified photodiode system was designed and built as an electronical circuit in a way that it could easily be miniaturised. In parallel micro-chips with silicium chambers were used as microbioreactors to adhere cells.

A 40-year-old, gravida 2, para 1 woman presented at a gestational age of 32 + 5 weeks' with sudden onset of a sharp chest and thoracic back pain. She was admitted 1 hour before the onset of pain because of some minor postcoital vaginal blood loss. Pregnancy was uneventful until 30 weeks of pregnancy when mild gestational diabetes was diagnosed.

The mitotic checkpoint is an essential surveillance mechanism that ensures high fidelity chromosome segregation during mitosis. Mitotic checkpoint function depends on numerous kinetochore proteins, including ZW10, ROD, and Zwilch (the ROD-ZW10-Zwilch complex). Through an extensive mutagenesis screen of hZW10, we have mapped the kinetochore localization domain of hZW10 as well as the hZwint-1 interaction domain.

Evaluating hospital design from an operations management perspective.

This paper describes an evaluation method for the assessment of hospital building design from the viewpoint of operations management to assure that the building design supports the efficient and effective operating of care processes now and in the future. The different steps of the method are illustrated by a case study. In the case study an experimental design is applied to assess the effect of used logistical concepts, patient mix and technologies.

Complete genetic linkage maps from an interspecific cross between Fusarium circinatum and Fusarium subglutinans.

The Gibberella fujikuroi complex includes many plant pathogens of agricultural crops and trees, all of which have anamorphs assigned to the genus Fusarium. In this study, an interspecific hybrid cross between Gibberella circinata and Gibberella subglutinans was used to compile a genetic linkage map. A framework map was constructed using a total of 578 AFLP markers together with the mating type (MAT-1 and MAT-2) genes and the histone (H3) gene.

Impact of chronic pain on everyday physical activity.

Although patients with chronic pain are often considered to have reduced levels of everyday physical activity, data on their activity levels are scarce and inconclusive. Therefore, this study explored whether patients with chronic pain have reduced activity levels, as objectively measured with an activity monitor. The activity monitor is based on long-term ambulatory monitoring of signals from body-fixed accelerometers during everyday life, aimed at assessment of mobility-related activities.

Acitretin induces capillary leak syndrome in a patient with pustular psoriasis.

Capillary leak syndrome is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition caused by a shift of intravascular fluid and proteins to the interstitial space. We describe a patient with pustular psoriasis in whom capillary leak syndrome developed after the start of acitretin. Immediate withdrawal of retinoic acid is necessary and corticosteroid therapy should be considered.

How to build a centromere: from centromeric and pericentromeric chromatin to kinetochore assembly.

The assembly of the centromere, a specialized region of DNA along with a constitutive protein complex which resides at the primary constriction and is the site of kinetochore formation, has been puzzling biologists for many years. Recent advances in the fields of chromatin, microscopy, and proteomics have shed a new light on this complex and essential process. Here we review recently discovered mechanisms and proteins involved in determining mammalian centromere location and assembly.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate pigs as a large-animal model for female genital infection with two Chlamydia trachomatis human serovar E strains. Sixteen-week-old specific-pathogen-free female pigs (gilts) were intravaginally infected with the trachoma type E reference strain Bour or the urogenital serovar E strain 468. In a 56-year-old woman, 'drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms' (DRESS) was diagnosed. She had been admitted to hospital twice in two months because of fever and skin rash. Further studies revealed that in addition to the skin rash, the woman also suffered from eosinophilia, lymphadenopathy and a temporary liver-function disorder.

A subacute toxicity study was conducted to evaluate the oral toxicity profile of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) derivatives. These thermoresponsive polymers may have several potential pharmaceutical applications such as ingredient for oral solid dosage form. A preliminary acute oral toxicity study was performed with one of the polymer (PNIPAAm-co-NVA) at a unique dose of 4000 mg/kg body weight administered to six male and six female mice, to determine the dosage for further evaluation.

Background: Moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to protect against cardiovascular disease. Aortic stiffness can be regarded as a marker of cardiovascular disease risk. Previously we have shown an inverse to J-shaped association between alcohol intake and aortic stiffness in middle-aged and elderly men and postmenopausal women.

Determinants of augmentation index in young men: the ARYA study.

Background: There is an increasing interest in the augmentation index (AIx), the proportion of the central pulse pressure resulting from peripheral arterial wave reflection, which has been related to cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.
