We propose an information processing pipeline for segmenting parts of the bowel in abdominal magnetic resonance images that are affected with Crohn's disease. Given a magnetic resonance imaging test volume, it is first oversegmented into supervoxels and each supervoxel is analyzed to detect presence of Crohn's disease using random forest (RF) classifiers. The supervoxels identified as containing diseased tissues define the volume of interest (VOI).

Objectives: To prospectively compare conventional MRI sequences, dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) with histopathology of surgical specimens in Crohn's disease.

Methods: 3-T MR enterography was performed in consecutive Crohn's disease patients scheduled for surgery within 4 weeks. One to four sections of interest per patient were chosen for analysis.

Background: Until now, no kinetic model was described for the oncologic tracer [18F]fluoromethylcholine ([18F]FCho), so it was aimed to validate a proper model, which is easy to implement and allows tracer quantification in tissues.

Methods: Based on the metabolic profile, two types of compartmental models were evaluated. One is a 3C2i model, which contains three tissue compartments and two input functions and corrects for possible [18F]fluorobetaine ([18F]FBet) uptake by the tissues.

A downscaled analytical HPLC purification strategy for [(11)C]raclopride and [(11)C]DASB was proposed to obtain a straightforward produced injectable solution with a substantially reduced volume. Both tracers were radiosynthesized using [(11)C]methyl triflate, and several analytical columns, in combination with ethanol containing eluents, were examined to optimize the chromatographic resolution. This resulted in a 5 mL solution of [(11)C]raclopride, obtained after 6 min, and a 7 mL solution of [(11)C]DASB, obtained after 10 min, using a C16-alkylamide and CN column respectively.

Primary intracranial germ-cell tumors are rare tumors primarily of adolescence, and literature on this disease in adults is scarce. The available evidence on intracranial germ-cell tumors is reviewed with a focus on adult patients whenever possible, and used to make suggestions for diagnosis and treatment. Diagnostic and treatment algorithms were developed to provide an evidence-based backbone to base treatment on in adult patients with a (suspected) primary intracranial germ-cell tumor.

Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) is a popular method for comparing diffusion characteristics across subjects. Unlabelled: Hepatic transport of (99m)Tc-mebrofenin through organic anion transport protein 1a and 1b (Oatp1a/1b) and multidrug resistance protein 2 (Mrp2) was investigated by small-animal SPECT. On the basis of the results, a noninvasive method to visualize and quantify disturbances in hepatic transport is proposed.

Methods: Friend virus B wild-type mice (untreated, bile duct-ligated, vehicle- or rifampicin-treated) and strain-matched knockout mice unable to express the uptake transporters Oatp1a/1b (Slco1a/1b(-/-)/(-/-)) or the efflux transporter Mrp2 (Abcc2(-/-)) were intravenously injected with (99m)Tc-mebrofenin (n = 3 per group).

In this paper a novel groupwise registration algorithm is proposed for the unbiased registration of a large number of densely sampled point clouds. The method fits an evolving mean shape to each of the example point clouds thereby minimizing the total deformation. The registration algorithm alternates between a computationally expensive, but parallelizable, deformation step of the mean shape to each example shape and a very inexpensive step updating the mean shape.

We present an extension of the symmetric ICP algorithm that is unbiased for an arbitrary number (N > or = 2) of shapes, using rigid transformations and scaling. The method does not require the selection of a reference shape or registration order and hence it is unbiased towards any of the registered shapes. The functional to be minimized is non-linear in the transformation parameters and thus computationally complex.

There is a lack of suitable animal models that replicate the slowly progressive chronic interstitial fibrosis that is characteristic of many human chronic nephropathies. We describe a chronic long-term (6-mo) model of lithium-induced renal fibrosis, with minimal active inflammation, which mimics chronic kidney interstitial fibrosis seen in the human kidney. Rats received lithium via their chow (60 mmol lithium/kg food) daily for 6 mo.

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the changes due to osteoarthritis (OA) occurring in the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint by comparing quantitative geometrical measurements in computed tomography scans of healthy and pathological joints in various stages of OA. The measurements were (1) the subluxation of the metacarpal on the trapezium, (2) distance from the scaphoid centre to the metacarpal base, and (3) distance from the metacarpal base to the articulating surface of the trapezium. The three-dimensional position of three characteristic points on the metacarpal, trapezium, and scaphoid were detected in each of the 90 wrists we scanned.

Investigation of the transport of reactive fluids in porous rocks is an intriguing but challenging task and relevant in several areas of science and engineering such as geology, hydrogeology, and petroleum engineering. We designed and constructed an experimental setup to investigate physical and chemical processes caused by the flow of reactive and volatile fluids such as supercritical CO(2) and/or H(2)S in geological formations. Potential applications are geological sequestration of CO(2) in the frame of carbon capture and storage and acid-gas injection for sulfur disposal and/or enhanced oil recovery.
