Background: Rhinoceros are currently one of the most threatened mammal species globally. Slow population growth, increased poaching and habitat destruction have led to increased conservation efforts for each species. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have been implemented in an attempt to aid reproductive outputs for the conservation of these endangered species.

COVID-19 vaccine (mRNA BNT162b2) and COVID-19 infection-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in adolescents.

The mRNA COVID-19 vaccine and COVID-19 infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be immunologic triggers for the development of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). There is not yet literature that discusses TTP induced by COVID-19 vaccination or infection in pediatric or adolescent patients. We describe three adolescents presenting with TTP (both de novo and relapsed disease) following administration of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine or after COVID-19 infection.

Fluoride content of toothpastes available in South Africa.

Unlabelled: A high dental caries burden coupled with a lack of water or salt fluoridation make it imperative that toothpastes available to the South African consumer demonstrate adequate potential for caries control and contain between 1000ppm and 1500ppm total fluoride (TF), with at least 1000ppm F in free available/soluble form.

Methods: The objective was to determine TF, total soluble fluoride (TSF) and insoluble fluoride (IF) concentrations in 22 fluoride toothpastes commercially available in South Africa. Samples were purchased from a major pharmaceutical and food retailer located in the two metropolitan areas in South Africa.

Whipple's disease. A case report.

A case of Whipple's disease in which there were some unusual features, although the results of histological investigation were characteristic of the diseases, is reported. This is followed by a brief review of the literature concerning this rare condition.

Metabolism of 14C-labelled L-tryptophan, L-kynurenine and hydroxy-L-kynurenine in miners with scleroderma.

Six South African White miners were studied with the 2-g L-tryptophan load test and tracer doses of L-tryptophan-7a-14C, L-kynurenine-keto-14C and hydroxy-L-kynurenine-keto-14C. The breath 14CO2 and 14 urinary metabolities were measured. When they were compared with a previous study of American women with scleroderma, similar 14CO2 and tryptophan metabolite excretion patterns were observed in the data from the miners.
