Screening and prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with severe mental illness: A multicenter cross-sectional cohort study in the Netherlands.

Background: Due to increased cardiometabolic risks and premature mortality in people with severe mental illness (SMI), monitoring cardiometabolic health is considered essential. We aimed to analyse screening rates and prevalences of cardiometabolic risks in routine mental healthcare and its associations with patient and disease characteristics.

Methods: We collected screening data in SMI from three mental healthcare institutions in the Netherlands, using most complete data on the five main metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria (waist circumference, blood pressure, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose) within a 30-day timeframe in 2019/2020.

Treatment results for severe psychiatric illness: which method is best suited to denote the outcome of mental health care?

Background: The present study investigates the suitability of various treatment outcome indicators to evaluate performance of mental health institutions that provide care to patients with severe mental illness. Several categorical approaches are compared to a reference indicator (continuous outcome) using pretest-posttest data of the Health of Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS).

Methods: Data from 10 institutions and 3189 patients were used, comprising outcomes of the first year of treatment by teams providing long-term care.

Preferences for cervical cancer screening: The role of implicit associations.

Objectives: Implicit associations influence behaviour, but their impact on cancer screening intentions is unknown.

Methods: We assessed implicit associations with cervical cancer screening using an evaluative priming task. Participants were shown primes ('Pap test', neutral or non-word) followed by positive or negative target words.

Predictive validity of self-report questionnaires in the assessment of autism spectrum disorders in adults.

While various screening instruments for autism spectrum disorders are widely used in diagnostic assessments, their psychometric properties have not been simultaneously evaluated in the outpatient setting where these instruments are used most. In this study, we tested the Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised and two short versions of the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, the AQ-28 and AQ-10, in 210 patients referred for autism spectrum disorder assessment and in 63 controls. Of the 210 patients, 139 received an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and 71 received another psychiatric diagnosis.

Do low-density diets improve broiler breeder welfare during rearing and laying?

Low-density diets may improve welfare of restricted fed broiler breeders by increasing feed intake time with less frustration of feed intake behavior as a result. Moreover, low-density diets may promote satiety through a more filled gastrointestinal tract, and thus feelings of hunger may be reduced. Broiler breeders were fed 4 different diets during the rearing and laying periods.

Parameters for quantification of hunger in broiler breeders.

The commercial restricted feeding programme of broiler breeders has a major negative effect on welfare, as the birds are continuously hungry. Objective parameters of hunger are needed to evaluate new management or feeding systems that may alleviate hunger and thus improve broiler breeder welfare. The aim of this experiment was to develop such parameters.

Determination of the circadian rhythm in plasma corticosterone and catecholamine concentrations in growing broiler breeders using intravenous cannulation.

This paper describes a fast and simple technique for cannulation of the vena cutanea ulnaris (wing vein) in ad libitum fed growing broiler breeders of 5 weeks of age. Twenty-four hours after cannulation, blood was sampled every 4 h during 24 h. The circadian rhythm in plasma corticosterone and catecholamine concentrations was determined for the first time in growing broiler breeders.

The present study describes a method to determine the onset and development of brain damage in broiler chickens. Exsanguination disrupts the brain metabolism and causes the brain to become ischemic. Energy-requiring systems in the cell membrane fail, which results in an ionic shift over the membrane, accompanied by a water influx into the cell.

Durable improvements in Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performance in schizophrenic patients.

We examined the potential reversibility of cognitive deficits of schizophrenic patients in performing the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), a neuropsychological measure of frontal lobe performance. The sample comprised 34 DSM III-R schizophrenic patients, who were randomly assigned to one of three groups, viz. two experimental groups and one control group, and were tested on six consecutive occasions.

Effect of dialysis before storage or cryopreservation on fertilizing ability of fowl semen.

Semen of broiler breeder males was collected and used for artificial insemination. Semen was used undiluted and diluted and both inseminated immediately after collection. Only diluted semen was used after storage.

Fertility rate of daily collected and cryopreserved fowl semen.

Semen was collected for 4 consecutive d individually from experimental broiler breeder males that had not been massaged for 7 d. The semen was mixed and diluted with the Beltsville Poultry Semen Extender with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as cryoprotectant and cryopreserved. After thawing of the semen, hens were inseminated and fertility over 1 wk after a single insemination with the cryopreserved semen was determined.

A selection for sperm quality was carried out in the White Plymouth Rock population of the Spelderholt institute. The percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa was used as the most important selection criterion. The population was selected in two directions, viz.
