Emerging adulthood is an important developmental phase often accompanied by peaks in loneliness, social anxiety, and depression. However, knowledge is lacking on how the relationships between emotional loneliness, social loneliness, social isolation, social anxiety and depression evolve over time. Gaining insight in these temporal relations is crucial for our understanding of how these problems arise and maintain each other across time.

Blue light is an important signal for fungal development. In the mushroom-forming basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune, blue light is detected by the White Collar complex, which consists of WC-1 and WC-2. Most of our knowledge on this complex is derived from the ascomycete Neurospora crassa, where both WC-1 and WC-2 contain GATA zinc-finger transcription factor domains.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the complex structures called fruiting bodies produced by mushroom-forming fungi, which grow through a genetically programmed process for their development, differentiation, and reproduction.
  • The authors identify 921 conserved gene families related to fruiting body morphogenesis, with many previously uncharacterized, and provide novel functional hypotheses based on gene expression and literature reviews.
  • A general model of fruiting body development is proposed, detailing an early proliferative phase and a later growth phase involving cell expansion and sporulation, discussing the potential roles of 1,480 genes across several fungal species.

Background: Loneliness and social isolation are known to be associated with depression, general anxiety, and social anxiety. However, knowledge on the overlapping and unique features of these relationships, while differentiating between social loneliness (perceived absence of an acceptable social network) and emotional loneliness (perceived absence of close connections), is lacking.

Methods: We constructed a network analysis to examine the relationships between self-reported social loneliness, emotional loneliness, social isolation, depression, general anxiety and social anxiety in a large sample of university students (N = 7314, 67.

Introduction: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) associated with narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can impair vigilance/attention. Solriamfetol, a dopamine/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is approved to treat EDS associated with narcolepsy (75-150 mg/day) or OSA (37.5-150 mg/day).

Purpose: Previous studies have shown a wide range of efficacy (29 to 71%) of a mandibular advancement device (MAD) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Currently, the ability to preselect suitable patients for MAD therapy based on individual characteristics related to upper airway collapsibility is limited. We investigated if the use of non-custom interim MAD during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) could be a valuable screening tool to predict MAD treatment outcome.

Guided internet-based treatment is more efficacious than completely unguided or self-guided internet-based treatment, yet within the spectrum of guidance, little is known about the added value of human support compared to more basic forms of guidance. The primary aims of this meta-analysis were: (1) to examine whether human guidance was more efficacious than technological guidance in text-based internet treatments ("e-therapy") for mental disorders, and (2) whether more intensive human guidance outperformed basic forms of human guidance. PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials that directly compared various types and degrees of online guidance.

Wood-decaying fungi of the class Agaricomycetes (phylum Basidiomycota) are saprotrophs that break down lignocellulose and play an important role in nutrient recycling. They secrete a wide range of extracellular plant cell wall degrading enzymes that break down cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the main building blocks of plant biomass. Although the production of these enzymes is regulated mainly at the transcriptional level, no activating regulators have been identified in any wood-decaying fungus in the class Agaricomycetes.

Study Objectives: Numerous types of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) are available to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea, varying from noncustom to custom devices. Only a limited number of studies have been performed to determine whether a noncustom MAD could be used to predict treatment success of a custom MAD. In this study, we investigated the potential of a new-generation noncustom MAD, by comparing its effectiveness with a custom MAD.

Common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, often emerge in college students during the transition into early adulthood. Mental health problems can seriously impact students' functioning, interpersonal relationships, and academic achievement. Actively reaching out to college students with mental health problems and offering them internet-based interventions may be a promising way of providing low-threshold access to evidence-based treatment in colleges.

Introduction: Emerging adulthood is a phase in life that is associated with an increased risk to develop a variety of mental health disorders including anxiety and depression. However, less than 25% of university students receive professional help for their mental health reports. Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) may entail useful interventions in a format that is attractive for university students.

Purpose: Depending on the severity of pre-treatment obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the criteria used to define treatment success, the efficacy of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) ranges from 30 to 69%. Identifying suitable candidates is the key to increasing the efficacy of a MAD. Positive predictors include a low body mass index, a low apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and low age.

Article Synopsis
  • Psychological issues like procrastination, perfectionism, low self-esteem, test anxiety, and stress are prevalent among college students and are linked to various mental disorders.
  • Evidence-based treatments can effectively address these psychological problems and may also help reduce the prevalence of disorders like depression and anxiety, providing opportunities for less stigmatizing mental health care.
  • A study of 2,449 students identified strong associations between psychological problems and increased risks for generalized anxiety, major depression, panic disorder, and bipolar disorder, with a significant impact on the prevalence of these mental disorders.

Purpose: As drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) can provide additional diagnostic information on collapse patterns of the upper-airway, it is widely used in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Although more controversial, DISE may also predict the success of treatment with a mandibular advancement device (MAD) and/or positional therapy (PT). In 2018, we proposed a prediction model to investigate the predictive value of passive maneuvers during DISE - such as jaw thrust and changes in body position - on upper-airway patency.
