The National Institutes of Health defines health disparities as the "differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States." Current research reveals that affluent citizens in America experience better health than those who are not affluent. Research also reveals that the number of citizens experiencing poor health is increasing.

Health disparities, particularly in African-Americans, have been identified in a variety of settings. A secondary qualitative analysis of focus group data sought to describe African-American's perceptions of health disparities. Using an interpretive descriptive approach, three main levels of interaction within the health-care setting were identified that contained barriers to receiving the best possible care.
