A nonconjugated methacrylate terpolymer containing carbazole moieties (electron donors), 1,3,4-oxadiazole moieties (electron acceptors), and Coumarin-6 in the pendant groups was synthesized via free radical copolymerization of methacrylate monomers containing the respective functional groups. The terpolymer was formed into 57 nm particles through a mini-emulsion route. For a thin 100 nm film of the fused particles sandwiched between an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode and an Al electrode, the structure behaved as a nonvolatile flash (rewritable) memory with accessible electronic states that could be written, read, and optically erased.

An effective method for tuning fluorescent response of an ultrathin (5 nm) polymer film, which can be used for generation of sensing arrays, is reported. This method is distinctive in that the modification of the optical response is achieved with polymer grafting of a non-fluorescent polymer to a fluorescent film. Using this approach, a number of films demonstrating different fluorescent emission when exposed to solvent vapors were synthesized.

Fluorescent silica nanoparticles decorated with a responsive shell, a mixed polymer brush, were synthesized. Specifically, a poly(2-vinylpyridine), P2VP, and poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, binary polymer brush was synthesized on silica nanoparticles via the "grafting to" technique. The selection of the components (PEG and P2VP) for the responsive brush shell was motivated by potential biomedical applications.

By mimicking the hydrophobicity and miniature protrusions of the lotus leaves using a monolayer of non-fluorinated hydrophobic polymer and functionalized nanoparticles, respectively, we have developed a permanent nanocoating to create ultrahydrophobic fibers/textiles with excellent water repellency and self-cleaning ability.
