This study examines how media acquisitions by corporate conglomerates influence the political slant of Australian newspapers. Using a comprehensive measure based on the language of over 30 million news articles from more than 200 newspapers, we analyze the impact of three major acquisitions between 2016 and 2019. Employing a synthetic difference-in-differences approach, we find that acquisitions can significantly shift newspapers' political slant, with effects varying by acquiring entity.

Dendritic spine morphology is associated with the current state of the synapse and neuron, and changes during synaptic plasticity in response to stimulus. At the same time, dendritic spine alterations are reported during various neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders and other brain states. Accurate and informative analysis of spine shape has an urgent need for studying the synaptic processes and molecular pathways in normal and pathological conditions, and for testing synapto-protective strategies during preclinical studies.

Enhancing mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapeutic efficacy through licensing with proinflammatory cytokines is now well established. We have previously shown that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF)-licensed MSCs exerted significantly enhanced therapeutic efficacy in reducing inflammation in house dust mite (HDM)-driven allergic asthma. Soluble mediators released into the MSC secretome boast cytoprotective properties equal to those associated with the cell itself.

We studied the effects of age and suntan on the expression of necroptosis signaling molecules (RIPK1, RIPK3, and MLKL kinases) and first TNF receptor (TNFR1) in isolated skin cells from women undergoing facelift surgery. In women above 50 years, the expression of the TNFR1, kinases RIPK1, RIPK3, and MLKL, the phosphorylated forms of these kinases was significantly (p<0.05) increased in comparison with the corresponding parameters in women under 30 years.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is more prevalent in females than males; the causes of this sex difference have not been adequately explored. Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in hypoxia-inducible factor 2α (HIF2A) lead to PAH and thrombotic consequences in patients and mice. In this work, isothermal sections of the O-CrO-BO ( = Gd-Lu) ternary oxide systems at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C were constructed by determining the phase relations by using a powder X-ray diffraction technique. As a result, these systems were divided into subsidiary subsystems. Two types of double borates, Cr(BO) ( = Gd-Er) and Cr(BO) ( = Ho-Lu), were observed in the investigated systems.

We develop a three-dimensional (3D) fully self-consistent model for analysis of an ultrashort THz pulse propagation and amplification in a nonequilibrium plasma channel formed in xenon by a femtosecond UV laser pulse. The model is based on the self-consistent solution of a second order wave equation in the cylindrical geometry and the kinetic Boltzmann equation for the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF) at different points of the spatially inhomogeneous nonequilibrium plasma channel. We analyze the wide range of plasma and seed pulse parameters and reveal the optimal regimes for producing high intensity outgoing THz fields as well as highly unipolar THz pulses within the proposed mechanism.

The Notch gene is a key factor in the signaling cascade that allows communication between neighboring cells in many organisms, from worms and insects to humans. The relative simplicity of the Notch pathway in Drosophila, combined with a powerful set of molecular and cytogenetic methods, makes this model attractive for studying the fundamental principles of Notch regulation and functioning. Here, using the CRISPR/Cas9 system in combination with homologous recombination, for the first time at the level of the whole organism, we obtained a directed deletion of the 5'-regulatory region and the first exon of the Notch gene, which were replaced by the attP integration site of the ΦC31 phage.

Most of the early Hungarian tribes originated from the Volga-Kama and South-Ural regions, where they were composed of a mixed population based on historical, philological and archaeological data. We present here the uniparental genetic makeup of the mediaeval era of these regions that served as a melting pot for ethnic groups with different linguistic and historical backgrounds. Representing diverse cultural contexts, the new genetic data originate from ancient proto-Ob-Ugric people from Western Siberia (6th-13th century), the pre-Conquest period and subsisting Hungarians from the Volga-Ural region (6th-14th century) and their neighbours.

An outbreak of nodular gill disease (NGD) in farmed rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) was recorded in Ladoga Lake (Karelia, north-western Russia) in Spring 2020. The disease was characterised by typical clinical signs including asphyxiation, distended opercula, loss of activity and swimming upside down under the water surface. Amoebozoan parasites of arrow-worms (Chaetognatha) were isolated from their hosts living in plankton of the Bay of Villefranche (Mediterranean Sea). Based on the light microscopic characters, the amoebae were identified as (Grassi, 1881) by their limax locomotive form and due to the presence of the intracellular symbiont, , surrounded by a layer of pigment granules. Sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of both and its symbiont were obtained for the first time.

Nearshore (littoral) habitats of clear lakes with high water quality are increasingly experiencing unexplained proliferations of filamentous algae that grow on submerged surfaces. These filamentous algal blooms (FABs) are sometimes associated with nutrient pollution in groundwater, but complex changes in climate, nutrient transport, lake hydrodynamics, and food web structure may also facilitate this emerging threat to clear lakes. A coordinated effort among members of the public, managers, and scientists is needed to document the occurrence of FABs, to standardize methods for measuring their severity, to adapt existing data collection networks to include nearshore habitats, and to mitigate and reverse this profound structural change in lake ecosystems.

We perform an alternative approach to produce highly unipolar terahertz pulses. The idea is based on the nonuniform amplification of seed ultrashort carrier-envelope phase (CEP) pulses in nonequilibrium fast relaxing plasma of air or nitrogen. If the gain coefficient drops significantly within the duration of a one-cycle CEP pulse, it undergoes significant distortion where the leading edge of the pulse is amplified and the trailing tail of opposite polarity is absorbed.
