In conditions of a wide use of psychopharmacological drugs the main trend in the activities of a day hospital is prevention of admissions to a mental hospital by elimination of relapses and exacerbations in these patients. Partial hospitalization and consolidation of the results of hospital treatment (stabilization of remissions in the patients, treated in a hospital) must be accomplished with the aid of a complex of psycho-social influences against the background of psychopharmacotherapy. In order to stabilize remissions patients with different types and depths of remissions may be transferred from a mental hospital to a day hospital.

The paper deals with the organization of a system of rehabilitative treatment of mental patients in conditions of a large and industrially developed region. It is stressed that in order to organize a wide range of readaptation measures it is necessary to have material security, an expedient distribution of hospital beds, a high standard system of a continuity between the in-patient and out-patient (including day hospitals and occupational shops) services. In this light it is very important to know the general principals of treatment by social methods and a correct succession of therapeutical measures and a gradual readaptation, adequate to the mental condition of the patient.
