Comparative Analysis of Structural Responses of Rat Subcutaneous Fat on the Implantation of Samples of Polymethyl Methacrylate with Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Surface.

Morphological analysis of the subcutaneous fat was performed in rats after subcutaneous implantation of basic dental plastic materials with different hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. It was shown that subcutaneous implantation of dental plastics with mostly hydrophobic surface and low biocompatibility induced destructive and inflammatory processes of various intensities, sometimes with allergic component; morphological signs of processes persisted for 6 weeks. Modification of basic plastics using glow-discharge plasma and enhancement of their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility significantly reduced the intensity of destructive and inflammatory processes and ensured more rapid (in 2 weeks) repair of the destroyed tissues with the formation of fibrous capsule around the implant.

Stable suspensions of nanogold (NG) and nanosilver (NS) with mean particle diameter 50 and 49 nm, respectively, were prepared by laser ablation of metals in water. To assess rat's pulmonary phagocytosis response to a single intratracheal instillation of these suspensions, we used optical, transmission electron, and semi-contact atomic force microscopy. Increasing the general level of academic capacity in general practice: introducing mandatory research training for general practitioner trainees through a participatory research process.

Background: To obtain good quality evidence-based clinical work there needs to be a culture of critical appraisal, and strong bridges between the clinical and the academic worlds in general practice.

Aim: The aim was to educate the general practitioner (GP) trainees to obtain critical appraisal skills, and through the development and implementation of the mandatory programme to gradually empower the GP community to achieve academic capacity by creating a link between the GP researchers and the GP training community. This was done by developing a faculty, giving teaching skills to GP academics, and research skills to GP clinicians; and creating an awareness of the potential benefits of critical appraisal in training GP surgeries.

[Developing training in critical appraisal for GP trainees in the Eastern Region of Denmark].

In 2004 training in critical appraisal became a mandatory part of the Danish medical specialist training. In this article we describe how the course was designed and implemented on the basis of experience from previous research training initiatives targeting GPs and GP-trainees; and how we continuously develop the course and tailor the training of teachers for the course using a multi-method participatory evaluation design, theoretically based on Stenhouse's definition of the curriculum as a process and the teachers as researchers.

Structural reactions of the buccal mucosa in diabetic parodontopathy.

Pronounced changes in the capillaries, hemodynamic disorders, epitheliocyte degeneration and atrophy develop in the buccal mucosa of patients with types I and II diabetes mellitus in the absence of inflammatory cellular infiltration or with facultative infiltration. The morphogenesis of pathological changes can be regarded as primary diabetic microangiopathy causing metabolic disorders with the development of degenerative and atrophic changes in all structural components of the buccal mucosa and development of diabetic parodontopathy, a primary degenerative process.

[Evaluation of influenza vaccine Vaxigrip in the combined immunization of conscripts during influenza seasons of 2002-2003].

The immunization properties of the influenza vaccine Vaxigrip, used in combination with vaccines against pneunococcal infection and hepatitis A (respectively, Pneumo 23 and Avaxim), were evaluated. In Central Russia in one of the units of the internal forces of the RF Ministry of Internal Affairs 3 groups totaling 755 servicemen were formed, depending on the complex of the introduced vaccines. Active medical observation and the registration of the complaints of the vaccinees at the postvaccinal period did not reveal unusual reactions and complications in none of the groups under observation.

[Causes of the technogenic changes in a freshwater zooplankton community].

The situation in water bodies of northwestern Karelia in 1992-2001 was analyzed. As a result of waste discharge from the mining and ore-processing works, weakly mineralized hydrocarbonate-calcium waters changed into highly mineralized waters with the prevalence of potassium ions and sulfates. The total abundance and biomass of zooplanktonic communities decreased.

[Antineuraminidase activity of inactivated influenza vaccines in elderly people].

The antineuraminidase activity of 5 inactivated split and subunit influenza vaccines (IIV) was studied in individuals aged above 65 years. Postvaccinal antibody titers were determined in the lectin test. All the vaccines were shown to have a high antigenicity, by providing high titers of neuraminidase antibodies in most vaccinated persons: The mean geometric titers (MGT) to influenza viruses A(H1N1) and A(H3N2), and B were 7.

[Comparative evaluation of the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of inactivated influenza vaccines in the elderly].

A comparative study was carried out to assess reactogenicity and immunogenicity of inactivated influenza vaccines (Begrivac, Vaxigrip, Grippol, Influvac, and Fluarix), licensed in Russia. Immunization of the elderly demonstrated low reactogenicity and high immunogenicity for all vaccines. Concomitant chronic diseases had no influence on the vaccine immunogenicity levels, which testifies to the benefit of vaccination in this age group.

[The laboratory diagnosis of spring-summer infections in Yekaterinburg in the epidemic season for tick-borne encephalitis].

The authors propose a comprehensive approach to laboratory diagnosis of seasonal transmissible infections, based on modern methods permitting etiological deciphering of disease. A universal diagnostic algorithm notably accelerated the laboratory diagnosis due to cutting the period between collection of material from a patient and consecutive screening for antibodies to agents of tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease, and California encephalitis.

[The principles of preoperative preparation in genital fistulae of an inflammatory origin].

Body defense potential was examined in 156 patients with genital fistulas of inflammatory origin. Addition of myelopid, an immunomodulating agent, to the scheme of preoperative treatment was experimentally validated. Preoperative preparation was assessed from the time course of the patients' general status, blood parameters, liver and kidney functions, and immunity status.

[The characteristics of the microflora in suppurative wounds in a large city].

Based upon their experience with treatment of 259 patients the authors have shown that purulent diseases are caused mainly by Staphylococcus aureus in combination with other microbes. The microflora of purulent wounds often was antibiotic-resistant. The duration of treatment is dependent on the character of the microflora.

[Hormonal regulation of glycemia and metabolic adaptation of newborn babies with intrauterine hypotrophy].

The content of hormones that regulate carbohydrate metabolism was studied during the early neonatal period in 80 full-term neonates with intrauterine hypotrophy. Early application to the breast (2 to 6 hours after the birth) was shown to promote the normalization of the hormonal content. The levels of blood serum C-peptide in the newborn depend on the degree of the rise of the mother's body weight during pregnancy and the presence of toxicosis.

[Blood immunogenetic markers in suppurative-infectious diseases].

The results are available of typing red blood cells (ABO, Rh, MN) and HLA antigens (locus A, B) as well as haptoglobulin in 118 cases of pyosepsis. The occurrence of some HLA-antigens and of haptoglobulin types was specified for an overall group of patients, staphylococcal and pseudomonas sepsis, vital infection patients. Distribution of the above immunogenetic markers in separate nosological variants of pyoseptic infection has been analyzed.

[Periodontal diseases in iron-deficiency states].

Dentists should be on the alert when treating periodontal diseases in risk-group subjects. A manifest gingival inflammation along with other signs of iron-deficiency state, coupled with no effect of stomatological treatment, give grounds to recommend these patients to consult a hematologist.

[Clinical significance of mean molecules in the prognosis of pyo-septic complications in patients with genital fistulas].

Fifty-four patients with a variety of inflammatory diseases were investigated. Thirty-four of those were admitted for elective surgical treatment of genital fistulas, and 20 patients underwent a conservative anti-inflammatory treatment. Three degrees of intoxication were identified on the basis of the mean molecular level.

[Clinico-experimental research on the use of collagen in periodontal disease].

Clinico-experimental studies of a new collagen derivative are presented. Experimental investigation in 30 rats showed the substance to promote wound healing. It also proved efficient in the five-years clinical follow-up of 254 patients after 441 surgical interventions (generalized periodontitis).
