The blood enzyme glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) has been postulated as an effective therapeutic to protect the brain during stroke. To demonstrate its potential clinical utility, a new human recombinant form of GOT (rGOT) was produced for medical use. We tested the pharmacokinetics and evaluated the protective efficacy of rGOT in rodent and non-human primate models that reflected clinical stroke conditions.

Circulating free tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis is gaining popularity in precision oncology, particularly in metastatic breast cancer, as it provides non-invasive, real-time tumor information to complement tissue biopsies, allowing for tailored treatment strategies and improved patient selection in clinical trials. Its use in early breast cancer has been limited so far, due to the relatively low sensitivity of available techniques in a setting characterized by lower levels of ctDNA shedding. However, advances in sequencing and bioinformatics, as well as the use of methylome profiles, have led to an increasing interest in the application of ctDNA analysis in early breast cancer, from screening to curative treatment evaluation and minimal residual disease (MRD) detection.

Objective: This article reviews the scientific evidence on the relationship between periodontitis and neurological disease, and particularly cerebrovascular disease and dementia. We also issue a series of recommendations regarding the prevention and management of periodontitis and these neurological diseases at dental clinics and neurology units.

Development: In response to a series of questions proposed by the SEPA-SEN working group, a literature search was performed, with no restrictions on study design, to identify the most relevant articles on the association between periodontitis and cerebrovascular disease and dementia from the perspectives of epidemiology, treatment, and the biological mechanisms involved in these associations.

We analyzed immune response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination by measuring specific IgG titers and T-cell reactivity to different SARS-CoV-2 peptides in multiple sclerosis patients taking different disease-modifying treatments. Of the 88 patients included, 72 developed any kind of immune response after vaccination. Although DMTs such as fingolimod and anti-CD20+ treatments prevented patients from developing a robust humoral response to the vaccine, most of them were still able to develop a cellular response, which could be crucial for long-term immunity.

Introduction: Vertebrobasilar stroke can be a diagnostic challenge. Bilateral vocal cord paralysis is very rare as a manifestation of acute stroke, yet it is potentially life-threatening because of the possibility of acute airway obstruction. No cases of bilateral vocal cord paralysis have been reported as a presenting symptom of acute stroke of mixed central and peripheral neurological aetiology.

The taxonomic assignment of sequences obtained by high throughput amplicon sequencing poses a limitation for various applications in the biomedical, environmental, and agricultural fields. Identifications are constrained by the length of the obtained sequences and the computational processes employed to efficiently assign taxonomy. Arriving at a consensus is often preferable to uncertain identification for ecological purposes.

Unlabelled: In the reperfusion era, a new paradigm of treating patients with endovascular treatment (EVT) and neuroprotective drugs is emerging as a promising therapeutic option for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). In this context, ApTOLL, a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) antagonist with proven neuroprotective effect in preclinical models of stroke and a very good pharmacokinetic and safety profile in healthy volunteers, is a promising first-in-class aptamer with the potential to address this huge unmet need. This protocol establishes the clinical trial procedures to conduct a Phase Ib/IIa clinical study (APRIL) to assess ApTOLL tolerability, safety, pharmacokinetics, and biological effect in patients with AIS who are eligible for EVT.

COVID-19 lockdown measures have impacted the environment with both positive and negative effects. However, how human populations have perceived such changes in the natural environment and how they may have changed their daily habits have not been yet thoroughly evaluated. The objectives of this work were to investigate (1) the social perception of the environmental changes produced by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and the derived change in habits in relation to i) waste management, energy saving, and sustainable consumption, ii) mobility, iii) social inequalities, iv) generation of noise, v) utilization of natural spaces, and, vi) human population perception towards the future, and (2) the associations of these potential new habits with various socio-demographic variables.

Objective: Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) applied to CT-perfusion (CTP) and CT-angiography-source-images (CTA-SI) may improve outcome prediction in large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke if compared to non-contrast CT (NCCT) alone. Besides, ischemia location may have enhanced capabilities, compared to ischemia volume alone, in predicting stroke outcomes. We aim to evaluate the association between ischemia location as measured by ASPECTS regions in NCCT, CTP maps and CTA-SI and 3 months outcome in patients with LVO treated with mechanical thrombectomy (MT).

A role of iron as a target to prevent stroke-induced neurodegeneration has been recently revisited due to new evidence showing that ferroptosis inhibitors are protective in experimental ischemic stroke and might be therapeutic in other neurodegenerative brain pathologies. Ferroptosis is a new form of programmed cell death attributed to an overwhelming lipidic peroxidation due to excessive free iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study aims to evaluate the safety and tolerability and to explore the therapeutic efficacy of the iron chelator and antioxidant deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) in ischemic stroke patients.
