Gel dosimeters, including radiochromic types like Fricke, as well as polymer formulations, are considered to be the only reliable option for accurate 3D dosimetry. Nevertheless, their implementation in daily clinical quality assurance still remains strongly limited for a few high specialized radiotherapy centres. Although gel dosimeters present very good water-equivalence due to their inherent chemical and isotopic compositions, addressing the corresponding dosimetry outputs is highly challenging, needing careful assessment in terms of the different radiation qualities involved in the mixed field.

Purpose: To test the feasibility of using hospital discharge records (HDR) to monitor frequency indicators of hematologic malignancies (HM) in Abruzzo, an Italian region without a cancer registry.

Methods: Hospital discharge records contain a primary diagnosis field for principal disease and 5 secondary diagnosis fields for other diseases related or not to the principal diagnosis. In order to build patient indicators of HM-non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), multiple myeloma (MM), and leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia [ALL], chronic lymphoid leukemia [CLL], acute myeloid leukemia [AML], and chronic myeloid leukemia [CML])-residents with first ICD-9-CM code 200-208 in any HDR field, or only in primary field, were identified.

Background: The classic infratemporal fossa type A approach (IFTA-A) permits superior and anterior exposure of the jugular foramen. The transcondylar-transtubercular extension facilitates posteroinferior and medial access to the jugular foramen. The purpose of this study was to present the IFTA-A with transcondylar-transtubercular extension and to assess its surgical results.

Head and neck paragangliomas, rare neoplasms of the paraganglia composed of nests of neurosecretory and glial cells embedded in vascular stroma, provide a remarkable example of organoid tumor architecture. To identify genes and pathways commonly deregulated in head and neck paraganglioma, we integrated high-density genome-wide copy number variation (CNV) analysis with microRNA and immunomorphological studies. Gene-centric CNV analysis of 24 cases identified a list of 104 genes most significantly targeted by tumor-associated alterations.

Objectives: We sought to determine whether commercial air travel soon after tympanoplasty significantly affects graft healing rates.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 169 patients who underwent tympanoplasty from 1993 to 2009, comparing two groups of patients: 69 patients who flew 1 day after surgery and 100 who did not. The confounding factors analyzed were side of surgery, size of perforation, surgical approach, graft material, and grafting technique.

The authors conducted a retrospective study on 23 patients (12 females and 11 males) with low-grade intramedullary chondrosarcoma of a long bone, treated with intralesional curettage, phenolization and cementation. The use of phenol was supported by an in vitro study, the use of bone cement by clinical studies. A consensus has been growing that this type of tumours should be treated less aggressively.

The most serious complications of total thyroidectomy, in cases of widespread and invasive diseases, are mainly hypoparathyroidism and laryngeal inferior nerve palsy. Lesions of the external branch of superior laryngeal nerve instead, although less obvious than the those caused by the recurrent laryngeal nerve lesions, have been taken less into consideration. The frequency of this lesion varies from 14% to 20% of cases, although in reality it is underestimated; in fact, on the one hand it is difficult to assess this, and on the other, post-thyroidectomy dysphonia is often considered inevitable.

Mandibular condylar neck fractures and subcondylar fractures represent, respectively, 19-29% and 62-70% of all mandibular fractures; treatment involves some problems, common to both, concerning the choice of an adequate approach. Herewith, personal experience is reported related to the surgical treatment of some cases of mandibular condylar neck and subcondylar fractures by transparotid approaches with partial parotidectomy, removing the salivary tissue overlying the condylar neck and/or the subcondylar region. Over the last 5 years, we observed 22 fractures of the condylar neck and 10 fractures of the subcondylar region.

Background And Aims: To estimate the impact of diabetes and its complications, overall and in different age classes, on the likelihood of hospital admission for specific causes.

Methods And Results: We carried out a record-linkage analysis of administrative registers including data on 8,940,420 citizens in 21 Local Health Authorities in Italy. Individuals with pharmacologically treated diabetes (≥2 prescriptions of antidiabetic agents during the year 2008) were paired in a 1:1 proportion with those who did not receive such drugs (controls) based on propensity-score matching.
