Article Synopsis
  • Knee osteoarthritis is becoming more common due to aging and obesity, and biological therapies like microfragmented Adipose Tissue (mFAT) injections may help improve patient outcomes.
  • A study evaluated the safety of harvesting adipose tissue and injecting mFAT in 34 patients under local anesthesia, observing them during the procedure and one week later.
  • Results showed only minor issues like ecchymosis and mild discomfort, with no significant adverse events reported, indicating the procedure is safe.

Purpose: Enterocutaneous fistula (ECF) is a condition in which there is an abnormal connection between the intestinal tract and the skin. It can lead to high morbidity and mortality rates despite the availability of therapeutic options. Stem cells have emerged as a potential strategy to treat ECF.

Introduction: nose is the central point of the face and vulnerable to the occurence of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), impacting on appearance. The paramedian forehead flap (PMFF) is considered the best option to treat extensive nasal defects. The objective of this study is to present the experience on PMFF for nasal reconstruction in the treatment of NMSC of a cancer referral center.

Introduction: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is responsible for high morbidity and mortality, resulting in a high cost to the health system. The nose is the leading region affected by this type of tumor and may need reconstruction by tissue transfer. The paramedian forehead flap (PFF) is one of the main options used, and the factors that influence the result should be studied.

This study presents the method used for chest reconstruction and treatment of mediastinitis following cardiac surgery at the Heart Institute of the University of São Paulo Medical School. After infection control with antibiotic therapy associated with aggressive surgical debridement and negative pressure wound therapy, chest reconstruction is performed using flaps. The advantages and disadvantages of negative pressure wound therapy are discussed, as well as options for flap-based chest reconstruction according to the characteristics of the patient and sternum.

We explored the utility of T-wave alternans (TWA) in predicting mortality in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS). Maximum TWA was calculated using Modified Moving Average method from continuous electrocardiographic recordings in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction <40% and ventricular tachycardia (VT) ≥4 beats during index hospitalization or sudden cardiac death during the follow-up year and age- and sex-matched controls in the Metabolic Efficiency with Ranolazine for Less Ischemia in Non-ST Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome-Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (MERLIN-TIMI) 36 trial. All patients received standard therapy for NSTEACS plus ranolazine (n = 109) or placebo (n = 101).

Background: In clinical trials, dronedarone lowers ventricular rate during atrial fibrillation (AF). This agent was recently demonstrated to inhibit If in the sinoatrial node.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether dronedarone inhibits If at the atrioventricular (AV) node to reduce ventricular rate during AF by slowing conduction at the AV node.

Background: Coronary artery disease carries dual risk for atrial tachyarrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.

Objective: To examine whether low-dose ranolazine and/or dronedarone can protect against vulnerability to atrial fibrillation (AF) and ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Methods: In chloralose-anesthetized, open-chest Yorkshire pigs (n = 15), the proximal segment of left circumflex (LCx) coronary artery was occluded to reduce flow by 75%.
