A 75-year-old woman presenting with pre-syncope, shortness of breath and nausea was admitted to the emergency department following treatment with clarithromycin. Shortly after admission she developed a prolonged QT interval leading to torsades de pointes (TdP) and cardiac arrest. She was successfully cardioverted and clarithromycin was discontinued resulting in restoration of her usual QT interval.

To assay the relative importance of the principal RNA binding sites identified by crystallographic analysis, we introduced mutations into the 5'-sensor, the S1 domain, and the Mg(+2)/Mn(+2) binding sites. The effect of such mutations has been measured by assays of activity on several substrates as well as by an assay of RNA binding.

The enzyme rhodanese (thiosulfate/cyanide sulfurtransferase) is an ubiquitous enzyme and its activity is present in all living organisms from bacteria to man. Evidence has been accumulated to indicate that this enzyme plays a central role in cyanide detoxification. A comparison was made of rhodanese activity in different tissues of young male and adult male and female pig (Sus scrofa).
