A primary liver perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is an extremely rare entity. In this article, we present a case report with a review of the literature on the patients diagnosed with primary liver PEComa and an elaboration of diagnostic and treatment modalities. A systematic literature search was conducted using the terms "perivascular epithelioid cell tumor", "PEComa", "liver", and "hepatic".

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored how chemotherapy affects liver regeneration after major surgery in patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM), comparing them to a control group with benign liver issues.
  • Results showed that the control group had significantly better liver regeneration in the first month after surgery than the CRLM patients.
  • The findings indicate that lower TGF-β1 levels are associated with impaired liver regeneration in CRLM patients, suggesting TGF-β1 plays a role in limiting recovery after chemotherapy and surgery.

The fox tapeworm causes human alveolar echinococcosis, commonly affecting the liver. However, in ∼1% of cases, systematic spread of the disease involves the brain as well. A patient had a 6-year history of liver and lung alveolar echinococcosis that was considered not suitable for surgery, and treatment with albendazole was introduced.

In the Baltic countries, the two zoonotic diseases, alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, and cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus, are of increasing public health concern. Observations from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania indicate that the distribution of both parasites is wider in the Baltics than previously expected. In this paper, we review and discuss the available data, regarding both parasitoses in animals and humans, from the Baltic countries and selected adjacent regions.
