Folates serve as key enzyme cofactors in several biological processes. Folic acid supplementation is a cornerstone practice but may have a "dark side". Indeed, the accumulation of circulating unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) has been associated with various chronic inflammatory conditions, including cancer.

Methods: A total of 1,106 patients with spinal deformity and 205 perioperative variables were included. A stepwise machine-learning (ML) approach using random forest (RF) analysis and multivariable logistic regression was performed.

Background: Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are commonly used in esthetic medicine for facial contouring and rejuvenation. However, complications such as overcorrection, vascular occlusion, and irregular filler distribution necessitate the use of hyaluronidase to dissolve the fillers. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hyaluronidase in degrading different types of HA fillers and provide clinical guidelines for its use based on filler type, dosage, and application techniques.

In combining these etiology groups, we obligatorily lump together many disparate diagnoses, particularly true in the neuromuscular (NM) cohort. We sought to evaluate the influence of underlying neuromuscular diagnosis on the HrQOL at 5 years following surgery for EOS.

Recently, a specific NOVA-FFQ was proposed for the evaluation of ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, but it does not allow the simultaneous assessment of energy and nutrient intake. We evaluate the concordance between the NOVA-FFQ and a common questionnaire (EPIC-FFQ) when assessing (1) the intake of foods with different degrees of processing and (2) the relationship between diet composition and cardiometabolic profile.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLip augmentation has become one of the most popular esthetic procedures globally, driven by societal standards that equate full lips with youth and sensuality. While young individuals often seek volume enhancement for lip beautification, older adults pursue lip rejuvenation to counter aging effects, such as volume loss, fine lines, and reduced definition. A range of techniques has been developed to meet these esthetic goals, but achieving natural and safe results remains a challenge.

Methods: The population-based study included women aged 15-49 years, both with and without PAC, who were residents in the area covered by the 19 participating Cancer Registries between 2003 and 2015 and identified by individual deterministic linkage with the Hospital Discharge Database.
Background: The postprandial glucose response (PPGR), contributing to the glycemic variability (GV), is positively associated with cardiovascular disease risk in people without diabetes, and can thus represent a target for cardiometabolic prevention strategies.
Objectives: The study aimed to distinguish patterns of PPGR after a single nonstandardized meal and to evaluate their relationship with the habitual diet and the daily glucose profile (DGP) in individuals at high-cardiometabolic risk.
Methods: Baseline 4-d continuous glucose monitoring was performed in 159 adults recruited in the MEDGI-Carb trial.
We previously demonstrated that patients with metastatic unresectable stage IIIb-IV melanoma receiving cetirizine (a second-generation H1 antagonist antihistamine) premedication with immunotherapy had better outcomes than those not receiving cetirizine. In this retrospective study, we searched for a gene signature potentially predictive of the response to the addition of cetirizine to checkpoint inhibition (nivolumab or pembrolizumab with or without previous ipilimumab). Transcriptomic analysis showed that inducible T cell costimulator ligand (ICOSLG) expression directly correlated with the disease control rate (DCR) when detected with a loading value > 0.

Evidence suggests that the Mediterranean Diet (MD) is associated with endothelial function improvement and, in turn, plays an important role in atherosclerosis development and progression.
Objectives: To evaluate both acute and sustained effects of the MD on endothelial function in patients with high cardiometabolic risk.

Background: The impact of prolonged digital device exposure on physical and mental health in children has been widely investigated by the scientific community. Additionally, the lockdown periods due to the COVID-19 pandemic further exposed children to screen time for e-learning activities. The aim of this systematic review (PROSPERO Registration: CRD42022315596) was to evaluate the effect of digital device exposure on children's health.

Previous work by our group has documented inconsistency in the identification of T12 despite the use of these systems including the Spinal Deformity Study Group (SDSG) conventions. To assist with consistent and repeatable identification of proposed preoperative surgical levels, the current study investigates a new strategy: utilization of a "landmark vertebra".

Methods: From an international EOS registry, patients with iEOS treated with MCGR were identified. Scoliosis, kyphosis, traditional coronal height, and 3D true spine length (3D-TSL) were measured pre-index surgery, post-index, and at 2 year follow-up.
Background: Magnetic controlled growth rods (MCGR) are the most common type of implant used for operative treatment of patients with early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Rods can have either a 7-cm actuator, allowing 2.8 cm of potential expansion, or a 9-cm actuator which allows 4.

The new (2021) equation was shown to yield higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values than the old (2009) one in a non-Black general population sample, thus reclassifying a significant number of individuals to a better eGFR category. However, reclassified individuals were previously shown to have a lower risk of progression to end-stage kidney disease, but higher adjusted risks for all-cause death and morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease than those not reclassified.

This study uses a simple, reproducible, and quantitative "team consistency score" and a nodal-based model for examining prior interactions amongst team members to represent and quantify the regularity of an OR team for a specific surgical case.
Methods: The electronic medical record (EMR) at our institution was queried for pediatric patients undergoing spinal surgery from January 2021 through December 2023.
Background: The impact of the order of treatment with checkpoint inhibitors or BRAF/MEK inhibitors on the development of brain metastases in patients with metastatic unresectable V600-mutant melanoma is unknown. The SECOMBIT trial examined the impact of the order of receipt of these treatments in such patients.
Methods: In this three-arm trial, we reviewed patients without brain metastases who received the BRAF/MEK inhibitors encorafenib and binimetinib until they had progressive disease followed by the immune checkpoint inhibitors ipilimumab and nivolumab (arm A); or treatment with ipilimumab and nivolumab until they had progressive disease followed by encorafenib and binimetinib (arm B); or treatment with encorafenib and binimetinib for 8 weeks followed by ipilimumab and nivolumab until they had progressive disease followed by retreatment with encorafenib arm binimetinib (arm C).
The standard of care for advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) was historically identified with platinum-based chemotherapy. Thanks to the advances in biological and genetic knowledge and technologies, new therapeutic agents have emerged in this setting recently: the immune checkpoint inhibitors and the fibroblast growth factor receptor inhibitors as the target therapy for patients harboring alterations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) pathway. However, chasing a tumor's tendency to recur and progress, a new class of agents has more recently entered the scene, with promising results.

Managing rosacea remains a persistent challenge for dermatologists, especially in cases unresponsive to conventional treatments. Injectable poly-d,l-lactic acid (PDLLA) has shown promise in treating erythema and telangiectasia associated with rosacea in addition to age-related concerns.

Although usually thought as mutually exclusive pathways, recent preclinical and clinical research provide preliminary evidence of a functional crosslink and crosstalk between HRR and MMR. Shared core proteins are identified as key players in both pathways, broadening the concept of DNA repair mechanism exclusivity in specific tumor types.
