Agronomic Performance, Oil Yield and Hydrolate Quality of Patchouli Cultivated in Different Soil Covers.

This study describes the evaluation of the effectiveness of different soil covers on the development, productivity, yield and metabolic content of patchouli oil (Pogostemon cablin) and its hydrolate. The agronomic experiments were carried out in the field, including four types of soil cover and six replications (4 x 6), using green cover (peanut), straw (crotalaria and millet straw), white plastic cover, and no mulch (weeding). After transplanting, the initial growth of seedlings was analyzed through weekly monitoring of plant height, stem diameter, and the number of leaves.

Emergency and Elective Colorectal Cancer-Relationship between Clinical Factors, Tumor Topography and Surgical Strategies: A Cohort Study.

: The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationships among several clinical factors and also the tumor topography and surgical strategies used in patients with colorectal cancer. We designed an analytical, observational, retrospective study that included patients admitted to our emergency surgical department and diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The study group inclusion criteria were: patients admitted during 2020-2022; patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer (including the ileocecal valve); patients who benefited from a surgical procedure, either emergency or elective.

Long-Term Outcomes 10 Years after Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: a Single Center Retrospective Analysis.

Introduction: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most frequently performed bariatric procedure in the world. The aim of the study was to evaluate outcomes after 10 years.

Methods: Patients who underwent LSG between 2005 and 2010 in a single center were retrospectively assessed, focusing mainly on the percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) after 10 years.

Progressive neuropathy in patients with lepromatous leprosy after multidrug therapy.

Background: The lepromatous pole is a stigmatising prototype for patients with leprosy. Generally, these patients have little or no symptoms of peripheral nerve involvement at the time of their diagnosis. However, signs of advanced peripheral neuropathy would be visible during the initial neurological evaluation and could worsen during and after multidrug therapy (MDT).

Metabolic, physiological and anatomical responses of soybean plants under water deficit and high temperature condition.

Water deficit (WD) combined with high temperature (HT) is the major factor limiting agriculture worldwide, and it is predicted to become worse according to the current climate change scenario. It is thus important to understand how current cultivated crops respond to these stress conditions. Here we investigated how four soybean cultivars respond to WD and HT isolated or in combination at metabolic, physiological, and anatomical levels.

Correlation Between Single-Pulse and Pulse-Train Stimulation During Neuromonitoring of Thoracic Pedicle Screws in Scoliosis Surgery.

Background: The use of thoracic pedicle screws (TPSs) during scoliosis surgery entails an inherent risk of neurological deficit. Triggered electromyography (t-EMG) is an accurate neuromonitoring test for detection of malpositioned TPSs. However, single-pulse (SP) t-EMG stimulation has shown variable capability for detecting medial pedicle breaches, while pulse-train (PT) t-EMG could be more accurate.

Leprosy Reactions and Neuropathic Pain in Pure Neural Leprosy in a Reference Center in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil.

Introduction: Leprosy reactions are complications that can occur before, during, or after multidrug therapy (MDT) and are considered a major cause of nerve damage. Neuritis is an inflammatory process that causes nerve function impairment associated with pain and tenderness along the nerve. Neuritis can be found in both type 1 and type 2 reactions and may also be the sole manifestation of a leprosy reaction.

Searching for biomarkers of early detection of 2,4-D effects in a native tree species from the Brazilian Cerrado biome.

Biodiversity in the Brazilian Cerrado biome has been declining sharply with the continued expansion of agriculture and the excessive use of herbicides. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the morphophysiological and biochemical responses in plants to various doses of the herbicide 2,4-D. Specific biomarkers that characterize the phytoindicator potential of this species were determined.

The red flags of ulnar neuropathy in leprosy.

The diagnosis of pure neural leprosy is more challenging because patients share characteristics with other common pathologies, such as ulnar compression, which should be taken into consideration for differential diagnosis. In this study, we identify ulnar nerve conduction characteristics to aid in the differential diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy (UN) in leprosy and that of non-leprosy etiology. In addition, we include putative markers to better understand the inflammatory process that may occur in the nerve.

: The present study aimed to investigate associations between hormonal profile (cortisol and testosterone) and the psychobiological aspects of Paralympic athletes during a competitive season. : Male Brazilian Paralympic swimmers (n = 11) were evaluated in three Training Camps (TC) during the cycle of training for the Paralympic Games RIO 2016. Questionnaires were used for data collection of stress and recovery, motivation in sport and hormonal status was assessed by salivary samples of cortisol ([Csal]) and testosterone ([Tsal]) concentrations.

Laryngeal Mask Airway Versus Other Airway Devices for Anesthesia in Children With an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Respiratory Complications.

There is an association between upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and an increased incidence of perioperative respiratory adverse events (PRAEs), which is a major risk for morbidity during pediatric anesthesia. The aim of the present study was to compare the risk of PRAEs among different airway devices during anesthesia in children with a URTI. A systematic review according to the Cochrane Handbook and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted.

Clinical and Neurophysiological Features of Leprosy Patients with Neuropathic Pain.

Neural pain is a frequent symptom in leprosy disease. There is a paucity of data regarding neural pain diagnostics resulting in common prescriptive errors when neuritis is confused with neuropathic or mixed nociceptive-neuropathic pain. The present study identified important demographic, clinical, and neurophysiological features of 42 leprosy neuropathy patients presenting neuropathic pain (NP).

Development of a polymorphic short tandem repeat locus multiplex system for efficient human identification.

This study aimed to develop a short tandem repeat (STR) multiplex system, made up of 22 highly informative STR loci, for application in forensic genetics. The system comprised 21 polymorphic autosomal loci (D3S1358, TH01, D21S11, D18S51, Penta E, D5S818, D13S317, D7S820, D16S539, CSF1PO, Penta D, vWA, D8S1179, TPOX, FGA, D2S441, D17S1301, D19S433, D18S853, D20S482, and D14S1434) and the amelogenin gene locus. Strategies were developed to overcome the challenges involved in creating a multiplex system.

Ultrasound as a safe and reliable guidance for subarachnoid puncture in rabbits.

Purpose:: To evaluate a model for studying the toxicity in nervous tissue and meninges using ultrasound to guide needle insertion into the subarachnoid space of rabbits, with the objective of avoiding injuries triggered by the puncture and by intraneural injection of solutions.

Methods:: Forty-five adult female rabbits were divided into 3 groups (G): G1 underwent subarachnoid puncture, G2 underwent subarachnoid injection of saline solution and G3 underwent subarachnoid injection of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine.

Assessment of Body Composition and Sport Performance of Brazilian Paralympic Swim Team Athletes.

Context: Body-composition assessments of high-performance athletes are very important for identifying physical performance potential. Although the relationship between the kinanthropometric characteristics and performance abilities of Olympic swimmers is extremely important, this subject is not completely understood for Paralympic swimmers.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between body composition and sport performance in Brazilian Paralympic swimmers 6 mo after training.

Analysis of the body composition of Paralympic athletes: Comparison of two methods.

Body composition is a physiological variable associated with physical activity and, in some cases, is related to athletic performance. Our objectives were to describe the body composition of participants in three distinct Paralympic sports and to compare the values of body density and estimated body fat obtained from the Paralympic athletes on the National Team by air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) and by the anthropometric method (skinfolds (SFs)). The sample consisted of 70 volunteers of both genders.

Inflammatory Cytokines Are Involved in Focal Demyelination in Leprosy Neuritis.

Mycobacterium leprae (ML) infection causes nerve damage that often leads to permanent loss of cutaneous sensitivity and limb deformities, but understanding of the pathogenesis of leprous neuropathy that would lead to more effective treatments is incomplete. We studied reactional leprosy patients with (n = 9) and without (n = 8) acute neuritis. Nerve conduction studies over the course of the reactional episode showed the findings of demyelination in all patients with neuritis.
