Early noninvasive identification of cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is of growing clinical importance. Low voltage on electrocardiogram (ECG), increased left ventricular (LV) septal thickness (ST), and global longitudinal strain (GLS) on echocardiography, and elevated brain natriuretic peptides (BNP) are used as surrogates of CA. Thirty-five patients (50 ± 14 years, 22 women) underwent electrocardiography to analyze low-voltage QRS (<15 mV) pathologic Q waves, poor R-wave progression, ST-T abnormalities, and left bundle branch block.

Benefits of glucocorticoids in non-ambulant boys/men with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A multicentric longitudinal study using the Performance of Upper Limb test.

The aim of this study was to establish the possible effect of glucocorticoid treatment on upper limb function in a cohort of 91 non-ambulant DMD boys and adults of age between 11 and 26 years. All 91 were assessed using the Performance of Upper Limb test. Forty-eight were still on glucocorticoid after loss of ambulation, 25 stopped steroids at the time they lost ambulation and 18 were GC naïve or had steroids while ambulant for less than a year.

Motivational enhancement therapy in obese patients: A promising application.

A pilot uncontrolled study aimed at investigating the efficacy of a motivational enhancement therapy adapted for obesity was conducted on 71 obese patients (59 females). Treatment consisted of 5 weekly group sessions and 3 weekly individual sessions. Outcome measures included Treatment, Motivation and Readiness test (TREMORE) and anthropometric measures.

Revisiting the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in a tourism development context.

This study investigates empirically an extended version of the Environmental Kuznets Curve model that controls for tourism development. We find that international tourist arrivals into Turkey alongside income, squared income and energy consumption, cointegrate with CO2 emissions. Tourist arrivals, growth, and energy consumption exert a positive and significant impact on CO2 emissions in the long-run.

A G-quadruplex-binding compound showing anti-tumour activity in an in vivo model for pancreatic cancer.

We report here that a tetra-substituted naphthalene-diimide derivative (MM41) has significant in vivo anti-tumour activity against the MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer xenograft model. IV administration with a twice-weekly 15 mg/kg dose produces ca 80% tumour growth decrease in a group of tumour-bearing animals. Two animals survived tumour-free after 279 days.

Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are considered a serious public health problem worldwide, affecting especially young people. The international monitoring data indicate that 70% of patients with STIs are aged between 15 and 24 years and the World Health Organization estimates that one out of 20 teenagers contracts an STI each year. A new series of nortopsentin analogues, in which the imidazole ring of the natural product was replaced by thiazole and the indole unit bound to position 2 of the thiazole ring was substituted by a 7-azaindole moiety, was efficiently synthesized. Two of the new nortopsentin analogues showed good antiproliferative effect against the totality of the NCI full panel of human tumor cell lines (~60) having GI50 values ranging from low micromolar to nanomolar level. The mechanism of the antiproliferative effect of these derivatives, investigated on human hepatoma HepG2 cells, was pro-apoptotic, being associated with externalization of plasma membrane phosphatidylserine and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Anal melanoma with neuroendocrine differentiation: report of a case.

Melanoma of the anal cavity is an uncommon malignant tumor with an aggressive clinical behavior. The presence of nonmelanocytic cell or tissue components, designated as divergent differentiation, is an unusual but well-documented phenomenon in melanoma. We experienced a rare case of amelanotic melanoma with neuroendocrine differentiation of the anal canal, occurring in a 68-year old woman.
