Article Synopsis
  • The text reviews various studies to explore the link between thyroid function and body measurements like BMI and weight in the general population.
  • A systematic search of databases yielded 64 studies for qualitative analysis and 21 for quantitative analysis, involving over 107,000 participants, revealing some associations between TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and BMI.
  • The findings suggest higher TSH levels are linked to higher BMI and weight, while higher FT4 (free thyroxine) levels are associated with lower BMI and weight, but highlight the need for more robust longitudinal studies due to limited evidence.

Activity of central amygdala (CeA) PKCδ expressing neurons has been linked to appetite regulation, anxiety-like behaviors, pain sensitivity, and addiction-related behaviors. Studies of the role that CeA PKCδ+ neurons play in these behaviors have largely been carried out in mice, and genetic tools that would allow selective manipulation of PKCδ+ cells in rats have been lacking. Here, we used a CRISPR/Cas9 strategy to generate a transgenic -cre knock-in rat and characterized this model using anatomical, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches in both sexes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how European thyroid specialists view levothyroxine (LT4) treatment for euthyroid women with positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) to improve fertility, as current evidence does not support this practice.
  • - An international survey (THESIS) revealed that 42.8% of over 2,316 respondents believe LT4 might be indicated for these patients, with significant variation across countries, highlighting a range from 22.9% to 83.7% of positive responses.
  • - Factors such as gender, age, and clinical experience influenced opinions; younger specialists and those who treat more thyroid patients were more likely to consider LT4, raising concerns about potential overtreatment risks in

  • Bone metastasis frequently occurs in advanced prostate cancer, and while bisphosphonates help manage symptoms, there are no curative options; the enzyme ST6GAL1, upregulated in such cancers, drives tumor growth and spread through altered glycosylation processes.
  • The study monitored ST6GAL1 levels in tumor and serum samples from patients, revealing that its upregulation is linked to prostate cancers that have metastasized to bone, promoting bone metastasis through various mechanisms.
  • Findings suggest that inhibiting sialylation can prevent tumor spread, indicating a potential new therapeutic strategy centered on sialic acid blockade for treating advanced prostate cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined variations in treatment outcomes and costs of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) across 8 hospitals in the Netherlands, focusing on how these differences can inform quality and cost improvements in care.
  • The study included 1010 patients and found that while clinicians reported high remission rates (83%), patient-reported rates were significantly lower (40%), indicating discrepancies in perceived outcomes.
  • Most variations in treatment outcomes and costs were linked to individual patient factors rather than the hospitals themselves, suggesting that future efforts should concentrate on enhancing patient-level care rather than evaluating hospitals based on these variations.

Background: The primary treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) is medical therapy using a standard step-up approach. An appendectomy might modulate the clinical course of UC, decreasing the incidence of relapses and reducing need for medication. The objective of the ACCURE trial is to assess the efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy in addition to standard medical treatment in maintaining remission in UC patients.

The Carbohydrate Response Element Binding Protein (ChREBP) is a glucose-responsive transcription factor (TF) with two major splice isoforms (α and β). In chronic hyperglycemia and glucolipotoxicity, ChREBPα-mediated ChREBPβ expression surges, leading to insulin-secreting β-cell dedifferentiation and death. 14-3-3 binding to ChREBPα results in cytoplasmic retention and suppression of transcriptional activity.

Introduction: Type 2 (T2) inflammation is a key mechanism in the pathophysiology of asthma. Diet may have immunomodulatory effects, and a role for diet in T2 inflammation has been suggested in the literature. Indeed, diet and food allergies play a role in children with atopic asthma, but less is known about diet in relation to adult asthma, which is often non-atopic.

Aberrant glycosylation is a hallmark of cancer and is not just a consequence, but also a driver of a malignant phenotype. In prostate cancer, changes in fucosylated and sialylated glycans are common and this has important implications for tumor progression, metastasis, and immune evasion. Glycans hold huge translational potential and new therapies targeting tumor-associated glycans are currently being tested in clinical trials for several tumor types.

Floods and droughts are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change and it is imperative to find ways to enhance the resilience of staple crops to abiotic stresses. This is crucial to sustain food production during unfavourable conditions. Here, we analyse the current knowledge about suberised and lignified outer apoplastic barriers, focusing on the functional roles of the barrier to radial O2 loss formed as a response to soil flooding and we discuss whether this trait also provides resilience to multiple abiotic stresses.
