Colonies of the N-fixing cyanobacterium spp. constitute a consortium with multiple microorganisms that collectively exert ecosystem-level influence on marine carbon and nitrogen cycling, shunting newly fixed nitrogen to low nitrogen systems, and exporting both carbon and nitrogen to the deep sea. We present the design and comprehensive investigation of stable para-substituted triarylamine-2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) radical ion pairs (RIPs) generated via single-electron transfer (SET). We quantified the degree of SET in both solution and solid phases, utilising a suite of spectroscopic techniques including IR, EPR, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Our findings reveal that the extent of SET is significantly influenced by the nature of the substituents (MeO > Bu > Br) and the polarity of the solvent (MeCN > DCM > toluene).

The carbon sequestration potential of open-ocean pelagic ecosystems is vastly under-reported compared to coastal vegetation 'blue carbon' systems. Here we show that just a single pelagic harvested species, Antarctic krill, sequesters a similar amount of carbon through its sinking faecal pellets as marshes, mangroves and seagrass. Due to their massive population biomass, fast-sinking faecal pellets and the modest depths that pellets need to reach to achieve sequestration (mean is 381 m), Antarctic krill faecal pellets sequester 20 MtC per productive season (spring to early Autumn).

Fish and other metazoans play a major role in long-term sequestration of carbon in the oceans through the biological carbon pump. Recent studies estimate that fish can release about 1,200 to 1,500 million metric tons of carbon per year (MtC year) in the oceans through feces production, respiration, and deadfalls, with mesopelagic fish playing a major role. Attributing the sources of legacy contamination, including brines, is important to determine remediation options and to allocate responsibility. To make sound remediation decisions, it is necessary to distinguish subsurface sources, such as leaking oil and gas ("O&G") wells or natural upward fluid migrations, from surface releases. While chemical signatures of surface and subsurface releases may be similar, they are expected to imprint specific dissolved noble gas signatures, caused by the accumulation of terrigenic noble gases in subsurface leaks or re-equilibration of noble gases following surface releases.
