Soft TiB-BN-C hetero-modulus ceramics were sintered with the assistance of in-situ reactions during the hot pressing of TiN-BC precursors. TiB formation was observed already after the hot pressing at 1100 °C, remaining the only phase identifiable by XRD even after sintering at 1500 °C. Analysis of reaction kinetics allows us to assume that the most probable reaction controlling stage is boron atoms sublimation and gas phase transfer from BC to TiN.

According to literature, the average age of children with unilateral atresia of the choan is six years nine months. Unilateral complete atresia of the choan makes it difficult to diagnose early: the initial diagnosis can be established in the second year of life and later, already at school age. In Russian and foreign literature in recent years, cases of diagnosing congenital atresia of choanomas in older children are known, the maximum age of children is 17-18 years, it is noted that such cases are very rare.

A dual-phase CrAlC material was synthesized using magnetron sputtering at a temperature of 648 K. A stoichiometric and nanocrystalline MAX phase matrix was observed along with the presence of spherical-shaped amorphous nano-zones as a secondary phase. The irradiation resistance of the material was assessed using a 300-keV Xe ion beam in situ within a transmission electron microscope up to 40 displacements per atom at 623 K: a condition that extrapolates the harmful environments of future fusion and fission nuclear reactors.

A dual-frequency light field scheme, composed of counterpropagating pump and probe light waves with equal circular polarizations and different intensities, is proposed for the detection of subnatural-linewidth electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances. In this scheme, the bright-type EIA resonance is obtained at fixed static magnetic field by tuning the frequency difference between both optical fields and can be used as a frequency reference in an atomic clock. Using a 5-mm long buffer-gas-filled Cs vapor cell, an EIA-based atomic clock with a short-term fractional frequency stability of 5.

Lake Baikal, the oldest lake in the world, is home to spectacular biodiversity and extraordinary levels of endemism. While many of the animal species flocks from Lake Baikal are famous examples of evolutionary radiations, the lake also includes a wide diversity of endemic algae that are not well investigated with regards to molecular-biological taxonomy and phylogeny. The endemic taxa of the green algal order Cladophorales show a range of divergent morphologies that led to their classification in four genera in two families.

The paper gives the results of a comparative analysis of the prerequisites for the emergence and spread of epidemics of particularly dangerous infections, by using plague in Manchuria (1910-1911) and Ebola virus disease in West Africa (2014-2015) as examples. Analysis of literature and archival data and online information could reveal a number of common factors and conditions, which substantially contributed to the epidemics. Organization of anti-epidemic (preventive) measures in cases of the threatening epidemic spread, of particularly dangerous diseases must be based on the minimization, of the influence of the specific factors and conditions, which facilitate disease transmission in a given area in a given time.

The chemical reaction between hydrogen and purely sp(2)-bonded graphene to form graphene's purely sp(3)-bonded analogue, graphane, potentially allows the synthesis of a much wider variety of novel two-dimensional materials by opening a pathway to the application of conventional chemistry methods in graphene. Graphene is currently hydrogenated by exposure to atomic hydrogen in a vacuum, but these methods have not yielded a complete conversion of graphene to graphane, even with graphene exposed to hydrogen on both sides of the lattice. By heating graphene in molecular hydrogen under compression to modest high pressure in a diamond anvil cell (2.
