Background: During a field course on spider taxonomy and ecology at the University of Helsinki, the authors had the opportunity to sample four plots with a dual objective of both teaching on field methods, spider identification and behaviour and uncovering the spider diversity patterns found in the southern coastal forests of Hankoniemi, Finland. As an ultimate goal, this field course intended to contribute to a global project that intends to uncover spider diversity patterns worldwide. With that purpose, a set of standardised methods and procedures was followed that allow the comparability of obtained data with numerous other projects being conducted across all continents.

We evaluated Clostridium difficile (CD) diagnostics in Finnish clinical microbiology laboratories during 2006-2011, with an update in 2015, in relation to CD surveillance data of the National Infectious Disease Register (NIDR) and ribotyping data from the national reference laboratory during the years 2008-2015. In 2011, diagnostic activity varied regionally more than three-fold and the positivity rate ranged between 7 and 21%. Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) was implemented in the regions with high activity and NAAT users tested 30% more patients and found 15% more cases per population than those not using it.

Methods: Intracutaneous skin tests with autologous sweat were performed on 50 AD patients and 24 control subjects.
Aim: We studied the serotypes and antimicrobial resistance of the invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae that had been isolated in Finland during 5 years. The 10-valent vaccine was introduced into the National Vaccination Programme in September 2010.
Methods: We examined the antimicrobial resistance and serotype distribution of the invasive pneumococci (n=4,194) that had been isolated in Finland during 2007-2011.
Aims: In November through December 2007, the drinking water distribution system in the town of Nokia, Finland, was contaminated with treated sewage effluent that resulted in a large gastroenteritis outbreak in the community. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the contaminated water in this outbreak was also a potential source of Clostridium difficile infections.
Methods: Samples from the contaminated tap water and treated sewage effluent were collected.
All currently available vaccines against Streptococcus pneumoniae are based on selections of the over 90 different serotypes, which underlines the importance of serotyping for surveillance and vaccine efficacy monitoring. In this study, we modified and validated a PCR-based scheme for deducing the serotypes of the invasive pneumococci isolated in Finland. For validation, 170 isolates were serotyped using the new protocol with six sequential multiplex PCRs for the deduction of serotypes, supplemented with Quellung testing when needed.

Multidrug-resistance among Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates, especially of serotype 19A, has increased in several countries recently. Even before the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine into the Finnish National Vaccination Programme, the proportion of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pneumococci had doubled from 2007 to 2008, when it reached 3.6% in Southern Finland.

We characterized the prevalence of pilus islets 1 (PI-1) and 2 (PI-2) and the clonality of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates taken from children with acute otitis media (AOM) to study the association between pilus existence and AOM disease potential prior to pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and increased antimicrobial resistance. The study material consisted of 75 pneumococcal isolates cultured from the middle ear fluid and/or nasopharyngeal aspirate of 56 children with AOM in Finland during the period 1990-1992. Isolates were studied for antimicrobial susceptibility and were serotyped, genotyped by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and tested for the presence of pneumococcal PI-1 and PI-2 genes.

Laboratory-based surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) monitors the baseline occurrence of different genotypes and identifies strains and transmission chains responsible for outbreaks. The consequences of substituting pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with spa typing as a first-line typing method were analyzed by typing 589 strains isolated between 1997 and 2006, with a focus on both short- and long-term correspondence between the PFGE and spa typing results. The study, covering these ten years, included all Finnish MRSA blood isolates and representatives of the two most prevalent MRSA strains (PFGE types FIN-4 and FIN-16) in Finland.

Since 2000, the epidemiology of C. difficile infections (CDI) has changed in the US and Europe. Few population-based assessments of both incidence and case fatality of CDI have been performed.

In our study, 3,571 invasive pneumococcal isolates, recovered from blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients in Finland between the years 2002 and 2006, showed an increase in erythromycin nonsusceptibility from 16% to 28% (P < 0.0001) over the 5-year study period, as well as a doubling of penicillin nonsusceptibility from 8% to 16% (P < 0.

The focus was directed at methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MR-CNS) and their SCCmec elements. A nasal swab was taken from 76 of the 80 residents 6 months after the onset of the outbreak.

Pneumococci were identified using standard methods, serotyped, and their susceptibility to oxacillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was determined using the disk diffusion method. Penicillin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the oxacillin-resistant isolates were further tested.

We analyzed the data on MRSA notifications of the NIDR, and MRSA isolates were identified mainly by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Finland during 1997-2004. One isolate representative of each major PFGE type was further characterized by multilocus sequence (MLST)-, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec)-, and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-typing.

Only a minority (12%) of the CA-MRSA strains contained the PVL gene loci and possessed genotypes formerly described as typical to CA-MRSA strains. The majority of these strains were heterogenous by MLST and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis but, however, harboured the SCCmec cassette type IV.
