How to make PROMs work: qualitative insights from leaders at United States hospitals with successful PROMs programs.

Purpose: Elucidate facilitators, barriers, and key lessons learned regarding the implementation of system-wide clinical patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) programs among United States (US) healthcare leaders.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 35 US healthcare leaders, including chief-level executives, data directors, PROM directors, and department chairs involved in PROM implementation across seven diverse healthcare systems from February to June 2020. Transcripts were coded, evaluated for qualitative themes, and categorized according to the consolidated framework for implementation research (CFIR).

Examining the First Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program (F1Doctors) for International Medical Students.

In this study, we report international medical students in the United States and conduct an analysis of the first, peer-to-peer, national mentorship program for international medical students and international pre-med applicants in the US (F1Doctors). We used analyzed survey data collected through F1Doctors and the Association of American Medical Colleges yearly matriculation reports. Results indicated that the average college grade point average (GPA) and Medical College Admission Test score (MCAT) of international applicants was higher than that of all applicants.

Analysis of self-initiated visits for cervical trauma at urgent care centers and subsequent emergency department referral.

Background: Following trauma involving the cervical spine (c-spine), patients often seek care at urgent care centers (UCCs) or emergency departments (EDs).

Purpose: The purpose was to assess whether UCCs could effectively image acute self-selected c-spine trauma without referral to the ED as well as to estimate costs differences between UCC and ED imaging assessment.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study identified patients receiving c-spine imaging at UCCs affiliated with a large academic hospital system from 5/1/-8/31/2021.

Impetus of US hospital leaders to invest in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): a qualitative study.

Objectives: Though hospital leaders across the USA have invested significant resources in collection of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), there are very limited data on the impetus for hospital leadership to establish PROM programmes. In this qualitative study, we identify the drivers and motivators of PROM collection among hospital leaders in the USA.

The Impact of Perioperative Cannabis Use: A Narrative Scoping Review.

As countries progressively embrace the legalization of both medicinal and recreational cannabis, there remains a significant knowledge gap when it comes to the perioperative uses of cannabis, as well as the management of cannabis users. This review summarizes the information available on the subject based on existing published studies. Articles outlining the physiological changes occurring in the human body during acute and chronic use of cannabis (outside the context of anesthesia) are also taken into consideration as understanding these changes allows a more calculated approach to better anticipate patients' needs in the perioperative setting.

Enterococcus faecalis Septicemia and Vertebral Osteomyelitis after Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy of the Prostate.

Transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUS) has rarely been associated with disseminated infection, yet the occurrence appears to be increasing. Resistance to fluoroquinolones, the most commonly used prophylaxis, is one of the likely causes, with Escherichia coli being the most commonly reported cause of these infections. Herein we present what is, to our knowledge, the first case of Enterococcus faecalis septicemia and vertebral osteomyelitis after TRUS.

Use of email in a family practice setting: opportunities and challenges in patient- and physician-initiated communication.

Background: Electronic mail (email) has the potential to improve communication between physicians and patients.

Methods: We conducted two research studies in a family practice setting: 1) a brief, anonymous patient survey of a convenience sample to determine the number of clinic patients receptive to communicating with their physician via email, and 2) a randomized, controlled pilot study to assess the feasibility of providing health education via email to family practice patients.

Results: Sixty-eight percent of patients used email, and the majority of those (80%) were interested in using email to communicate with the clinic.

Caring for patients after bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery leads to sustainable long-term weight loss and may be curative for such obesity-related comorbidities as diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea in severely obese patients. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass has become the most common procedure for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The procedure carries a mortality risk of up to 1 percent and a serious complication risk of up to 10 percent.

The relationship between income and performance indicators in general practice: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: To explore the relationship between the income of general practitioners (GPs) and the performance characteristics of their practices.

Design: Cross-sectional survey.

Setting: All practices (n = 166) in an inner city health authority, two years before the introduction of the new GP contract in April 2004 were studied.

Can application of exogenous fibronectin enhance periodontal regeneration?

Background: Although fibronectin (FN) is an important extracellular glycoprotein involved in periodontal wound healing, it is not clear whether the application of exogenous fibronectin (ExoFN) offers any clinical benefit. The purpose of this preliminary in vitro study was to determine the binding of FN from three different sources, viz. endogenous EDTA-plasma, endogenous serum and exogenous commercial purified human fibronectin in PBS buffer, to demineralized and non-demineralized root powder.

Effect of tea polyphenols on growth of oral squamous carcinoma cells in vitro.

Epidemiologic evidence indicates that both black and green tea is a rich source of flavonoids and other polyphenolic antioxidants which protects against heart disease and cancer. In the current investigation, utilizing human oral squamous carcinoma cell line SCC-25, we have evaluated the effect of three major tea constituents, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) on cell growth and DNA synthesis. Test agents in concentrations of 50, 80, 100 and 200 microM were incubated in triplicates in DMEM-HAM's F-12 (50: 50) supplemented with 10% calf serum and antibiotics in an atmosphere of 5% CO2 in air for 72 hrs.
