The vertebrate stress response enables an organism to shift energy towards activities that promote immediate survival when facing a threat to homeostasis, but it can also have detrimental effects on organismal health. Acute and chronic stressors generally have contrasting effects on immune responses, but the timeline of this transition between acute and chronic stressors and their effects on immune responses remains unclear. In this study, we investigate changes in immune markers in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus) after exposure to normal laboratory conditions, an acute stressor, and chronic stressors for 42 days.

Avian haemosporidians are protozoan parasites transmitted by insect vectors that infect birds worldwide, negatively impacting avian fitness and survival. However, the majority of haemosporidian diversity remains undescribed. High intensity ultrasound (HIU) is a technique with the potential to improve meat quality, however, more research is needed on its application within the chain of cold storage and freezing. This study evaluates the effect of HIU (40 kHz, 9.6 W/cm, 20 and 40 min) and post-mortem development on the yield and physicochemical quality of rabbit meat in samples treated with HIU pre- and post-storage in a freezer (120 h at -20 °C).

Tick-host bloodmeal associations are important factors when characterizing risks of associated pathogen transmission and applying appropriate management strategies. Despite their biological importance, comparatively little is known about soft tick (Argasidae) host associations in the United States compared to hard ticks (Ixodidae). In this study, we evaluated a PCR and direct Sanger sequencing method for identifying the bloodmeal hosts of soft ticks.

Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a metabolic disease that develops by a decrease in sensitivity of insulin receptors as an effect of the disruption certain metabolic functions in the processing of glucose. DM2 patients have, uncontrolled glucose levels, and commonly have problems with obesity and cardiovascular disease. Patients are treated with standard diet, insulin, diabetic oral agents and antihypertensive drugs, but this approach does not completely stops tissue deterioration since it does not address the metabolic root of the disease.
